Call of Duty: Modern Warfare now requires over 200 GB of storage space on PC after its latest update, making it one of the largest games ever released. The update added lots of new features to the game, including the Cheshire Park multiplayer map and a 200-player mode for the battle royale Warzone.

Modern Warfare’s file size has rubbed some players the wrong way before, particularly around the time of Warzone’s release. When the new mode debuted, players who already had Modern Warfare had to download a fairly hefty patch of up to 22 GB, while those who didn’t already have the base game needed to download 100 GB worth of data. At the time, the total package for Modern Warfare was around 150 GB, already a pretty massive chunk of file space. With the popularity of Warzone, updates have been coming quickly and bringing lots of new content with each one, making Modern Warfare’s total file size balloon rapidly to where it sits now.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

As Reddit user vanillaricethrowaway points out in a screenshot, the latest Modern Warfare update brought the game’s total size up to a whopping 209 GB on PC. The thread where the screenshot was posted is full of comments from incredulous players saying that the size has simply gotten out of hand. Some users say they’ve had to move the game to an external disc to save space, while plenty of others say they simply deleted the game when it got too large to be worth making room for.

As the Reddit thread points out, that 209 GB could easily hold several other games. Even multiple games with notoriously high file sizes could fit in the space taken up by Modern Warfare. Red Dead Redemption 2 raised a fuss when its 150 GB file size was revealed, but it’s actually topped by games like Destiny 2: Shadowkeep at 165 GB and, somewhat surprisingly, Quantum Break at 178 GB. One game that could give Modern Warfare a run for its money is Ark: Survival Evolved, which can take up over 250 GB of space with all of its optional updates and map packs installed. Modern Warfare is still larger than the base game, however, and players don’t have the option of uninstalling updates they don’t use.

It’s not hard to see why Call of Duty: Modern Warfare takes up so much space when it packs so much content into each update. Still, it can be hard to justify using all that disc space on one game, and that’s a problem that’s only likely to get worse when next-gen graphics make files bigger and bigger.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
