The decade-old first-person shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has randomly become one of Twitch’s most-watched games. Publisher Activision is known for churning out a new installment in the Call of Duty franchise every year since 2003, and rumors claimed that 2023 would be the first year Call of Duty would not release a new game in the popular franchise. However, an official statement from a spokesperson for Activision has disputed these rumors, ultimately promising new entries for both this year and next year. Many Call of Duty fans had hoped that one of the future entries would possibly be a new version of Modern Warfare 3.

Fans developed hopes for a new Modern Warfare 3 when Activision remastered the other two Modern Warfare games in the trilogy. In fact, the sequel seemed to hint at a remaster of Modern Warfare 3, with allusions that set up certain things in the third entry and even a reference to a remastered collection in a bonus level. Hopes for a remastered Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 were ultimately dashed when Activision denied the rumors in an official statement, stating that a remaster did not exist in any form, but some fans are still holding out hope.

The explanation for the sudden surge in popularity was mainly due to Spain’s top Twitch streamers organizing a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 tournament. Popular streamer IlloJuan orchestrated the event and was joined by the likes of other Spanish Twitch streamers like bysTaXx and TheGregf. Thanks to this tournament, the English-speaking Twitch community witnessed broadcasts from Spain topping the category.

Though Activision has recently announced that it is developing Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile, the recent surge in popularity around Modern Warfare 3 may spur the publisher to reconsider the development of a remastered version. The Spanish streamers’ tournament went viral partially because it fed off the notion that Modern Warfare 3 was making a comeback. This idea, combined with media coverage of the event, led to the spike in the 2011 game’s popularity.

With the current frustration Call of Duty fans have had with the gameplay and performance of the most recent entries into the franchise, revisiting the decade-old Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is like a breath of fresh air. Both Call of Duty: Warzone and Vanguard are not like Modern Warfare 3, with the latter often considered the pinnacle of CoD gaming. As older CoD fans hope for a return to popular features from older games or remastered versions, at least they can replay the classics.
