The trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness features a glowing superhero, and there seems strong reason to believe it may be a Captain Marvel variant of Monica Rambeau. Doctor Strange 2′s Super Bowl trailer was responsible for a number of reveals about the upcoming film, including the appearance of a number of heroes (of the new, old, and variant varieties). One of the most notable was the inclusion of a glowing hero that appears to be Captain Marvel.

While the MCU already has Carol Danvers filling the role, the introduction of variants into the franchise creates a whole new wave of possibilities for Doctor Strange 2. One of the leading theories about the glowing hero is that they’re none other than Monica Rambeau as Captain Marvel. The character of Rambeau first appeared in the MCU as a child in the 1990s-set Captain Marvel, and then went on to be a major player in the story of WandaVision.

Despite the potential problems presented by the Multiverse cameos in Doctor Stange 2, the idea that the glowing Captain Marvel-esque figure in the trailer is Monica Rambeau has gained a lot of early traction with fans. It certainly seems plausible – after all, the MCU’s version of the character was set up as a hero in WandaVision, so it’s not outside of the realm of possibility that a variant of her could appear as Captain Marvel in Doctor Strange 2. There are a number of reasons why this doesn’t appear to specifically be Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, the biggest of which is the presentation of the character’s powers in the trailer, as well as the fact that Wanda and Monica have history thanks to WandaVision.

Perhaps the biggest indication that this could be Monica Rambeau is that neither the figure’s face nor voice is shown or heard in the trailer. The figure is seen using Captain Marvel’s powers, and with so many rumored Multiverse character cameos in Doctor Strange 2, it’s most likely that the glowing figure is a variant of the MCU’s hero. However, as the variants of both Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch are still played by Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen respectively, a Carol Danvers variant would likely be played by Brie Larson. This has fueled speculation that Monica Rambeau is the one wielding Captain Marvel’s powers in the trailer.

In the comics, Rambeau was the second character to adopt the mantle of Captain Marvel, and as she’s already been introduced in the MCU in a different capacity, it’s not unlikely that she could appear in Doctor Strange 2. Rambeau appearing as Captain Marvel would be an interesting way for Doctor Strange 2 to make use of a recognizable Multiverse character, and further link the events of the film to those of Wandavision. The figure is seen fighting Wanda Maximoff, though, so she may be a villain in Doctor Strange 2 – but either way, having Monica Rambeau be a part of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness would be an interesting way to add to the MCU’s ever-growing roster of variants.
