An appearance from Godzilla in Apple TV+’s MonsterVerse show would break Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ continuity. According to an official synopsis, the upcoming TV series will explore the fallout from the Titan battle in San Francisco. The reveal that it will be set after Godzilla beat the MUTOs places the show’s events between the 2014 movie and King of the Monsters in the MonsterVerse timeline.

For the time being, there’s no word on which Titans will appear in the show. In regards to who would be available, the MonsterVerse is packed with giant creatures, although only a handful are Toho properties. King of the Monsters introduced four original Titans (one of which being a third MUTO), plus 11 more who were never shown on-screen. At this juncture, there are more than 20 Titans dwelling somewhere in the MonsterVerse. While that does mean the series has plenty to work with, not all of these Titans can appear. Where the shows fit into the timeline creates some limitations in terms of which creatures it can use. The third MUTO, for example, wasn’t discovered by Monarch until King of the Monsters.

One of the monsters that could be a big problem for Apple TV’s MonsterVerse show is Godzilla himself. At the beginning of King of the Monsters, a newscaster mentioned that Godzilla hadn’t been seen in more than five years. Godzilla being absent from public view for such a long period of time means that if he were to show up in an episode of the series, it would go against the continuity established by the movie. Based on what was said in the film, humans weren’t supposed to see Godzilla again until he re-emerged for the fight with Ghidorah.

Monarch did know where he was though, so some knowledge of his activities could be discussed in the series, especially if Monarch operatives are part of the cast. They were apparently keeping track of his whereabouts in the ocean. For this reason, the most Apple TV+’s Godzilla series could offer without creating continuity issues would be an underwater cameo. But if Godzilla were to come to the surface, keeping his return secret from the public would be impossible. Showing Godzilla may not be an option unless a future season skips ahead a few years.

Godzilla’s five-year absence between Godzilla and Godzilla: King of the Monsters is why the series may have to rely heavily on the expansions that the latter movie made to the MonsterVerse. If Godzilla can’t appear, Apple TV+’s show will have to focus instead on conflicts with Scylla, Methuselah, Behemoth, or perhaps some of the 11 missing Titans that haven’t been revealed yet. Fortunately, the MonsterVerse boasts more than enough creatures to feature a heavy dose of kaiju action (even without Godzilla’s involvement).
