MonsterVerse Hints At Why Godzilla & Kong Really Fight

The first Godzilla vs. Kong trailer adds insight into why the two Titans must fight each other in Legendary’s MonsterVerse. Serving as the fourth installment in the cinematic franchise, Adam Wingard’s upcoming sequel will feature two iconic monsters going toe-to-toe for the first time since 1962’s King Kong vs. Godzilla. After building up the figures’ eventual collision course since Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the two Titans will finally get the one-on-one matchup for sole dominance.

According to Godzilla vs. Kong‘s official synopsis, Monarch has taken Kong on a journey to find his “true home“. In doing so, they lock him up in chains before the fleet is met in the open ocean by the current King of the Monsters – Godzilla. Though it’s clear Monarch took Kong captive for a special mission, the first footage indicates that they obtained the Titan to act as a weapon against Godzilla. With the fate of the world hanging in the balance, Monarch considers Kong their “last chance,” hinting that Godzilla is the villain of the sequel.

By pinning Godzilla and Kong in a new grudge match, the latest MonsterVerse installment will have the opportunity to dive deeper into the mythology of the creatures. Teased throughout the fictional universe, the notion of an ancient Titan War was put in the spotlight in King of the Monsters. Through redacted text and cave paintings, it was revealed that Godzilla and Kong are the last two standing from the legendary Titan War, which featured their ancestors battling it out. In the present day, the two Titans are essentially ancestral enemies with a long history, and Monarch is well aware of that fact. To stop Godzilla once and for all, the organization’s last-ditch effort is for Kong to take down his the world’s biggest threat. Both Titans, however, view themselves as alphas.

Godzilla vs. Kong Proves There Can Only Be One Alpha

To capture an enormous beast like Kong is nearly impossible, but Monarch pulls it off because they are clearly desperate for a solution. With Kong as their only chance, Monarch is putting a ton of faith into the Titan. Kong is then shown to challenge Godzilla before facing off on an aircraft carrier. When Godzilla uses a signature move on his opponent in a later scene, Kong flashes his axe to absorb the atomic breath. As explained in the footage, Kong “bows to no one,” and based on the fights featured in the trailer, that’s an understatement.

Godzilla, on the other hand, won’t back down to Kong for an array of reasons; the most prominent being the fact that the Titan is the “King of the Monsters.” After Godzilla killed King Ghidorah in the previous sequel, Rodan and the other surviving Titans bowed to their new leader. Seeing as Kong is unwilling to play into that act of respect between Titans, violence is inevitable. Godzilla might think he’s the sole alpha, but the Titan will have its hands full in Godzilla vs. Kong.
