Moon Knight First Reactions Promise Original, Great (& Silly) MCU Show
The first reactions to Moon Knight are in, and they say Oscar Isaac’s Marvel show is original, great, and even silly at times. Kevin Feige originally announced plans to give Moon Knight a Disney+ series in 2019. While it wasn’t until much later that Oscar Isaac came aboard to play Marc Spector, Moon Knight immediately stood out as an exciting MCU project. This was due to the combination of Moon Knight’s status as a fan-favorite character, his darker tone, his connections to supernatural elements, and the ability to explore mental health due to Marc’s disassociative identity disorder.
Anticipation for Moon Knight has only increased over time, especially after Marvel Studios began releasing footage. The Moon Knight trailers have repeatedly highlighted the different personalities Oscar Isaac plays, as well as the brutal action and great visuals that come with Moon Knight. Marvel has kept information about the series a secret, though, as May Calamawy and Ethan Hawke’s villain are the only official co-stars for Isaac. That hasn’t stopped excitement from continuing to grow ahead of the series’ debut on Disney+, and now some early praise is rolling in.
Ahead of Moon Knight‘s release on March 30th, the first reactions have arrived online. The limited reactions come primarily from UK press members and in conjunction with the show’s world premiere event in Germany. The Moon Knight first reactions are very positive early on, as those who have seen up to the first four episodes praise the originality, Oscar Isaac’s performance, and the tone. Check out the reactions below:
I’ve watched the first 4 #MoonKnight eps and I’m as divided by this show as Marc himself. When it works, it’s a wildly original MCU entry with flashes of greatness, but some of the sillier aspects detract from the horror. Diehard comic fans might not enjoy it as much as newcomers pic.twitter.com/ZWitn1rpn2

#MoonKnight is a brilliantly bonkers dark globe-trotting adventure; this is Marvel’s trippy National Treasure. Oscar Isaac is the best addition to the MCU since RDJ, entwining torment and humour into a morally ambiguous cypher – Marc Spector is a whole new calibre of hero. pic.twitter.com/nlL9QgtbyA

Delivering lots of Indiana Jones style archaeology action (swap out the whip for a cape) and Oscar Isaac’s great turn in the lead role – #MoonKnight is plenty of fun.
It’s not as bonkers as I hoped for… but a later episode hints much more of that is coming 👀 pic.twitter.com/oDtAfvD4Hn

I’ve watched the first 4 episodes of #MoonKnight, it’s unlike anything we’ve seen before from the MCU. It’s a psychological thriller with a touch of Indiana Jones, it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. And Oscar Isaac delivers a mesmerizing performance. pic.twitter.com/OWYaWeye41

Full thoughts to come in my #MoonKnight review (when? very soon 👀) but I will say this: It’s unlike anything you’ve seen from Marvel before. I’d go as far as to say – and I don’t say this lightly – it’s the best MCU TV show ever

I’ve watched the first 4 episodes of #Marvel #MoonKnight & it’s unlike anything we’ve seen in the #MCU – Oscar Issac is Fantastic! I can’t wait to watch the rest of the series. This isn’t your typical superhero origin. It’s Excellent! It arrives on #Disneyplus on March 30th pic.twitter.com/BPUUmr4cPd

These Moon Knight reactions suggest that the show could be exactly what Marvel fans have been hoping for. The Indiana Jones comparisons have been popular due to Moon Knight’s ties to Egypt and the trailers teasing various locations around the world as Oscar Isaac’s character discovers who he really is. Many will also appreciate the praise coming Isaac’s way specifically. The differences in how he plays Moon Knight’s different personalities has been clear throughout the marketing, but audiences have only seen a glimpse of those interactions so far. That said, it seems the tonal differences might also not work for everyone.
It’s also interesting to compare the Moon Knight first reactions to the previous MCU Disney+ shows. While the other series’ starred characters audiences were familiar with and tied directly into prior MCU events, there are no such discussions with Moon Knight‘s first reactions. References to major events and crossover characters could still happen, but they are either too spoilery to mention in these reactions or not big enough to call out. In either instance, Moon Knight‘s ability to stand alone and build a unique origin story for Oscar Isaac’s MCU superhero is exciting, especially as it is the first Marvel Disney+ show starring a new character.
