Sony Pictures has delayed the release date of Morbius to 2022, just weeks after it was pushed back to the latter half of 2021. Morbius, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, stars Jared Leto as the title character. The film is the next installment in the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters that will follow Venom: Let There Be Carnage and set up a series of interconnected movies that will include upcoming Kraven the Hunter, Madame Webb, and Spider-Woman films.

Studios are shifting release dates as it appears most theaters will not be ready to open for the first quarter of studio releases. Universal has delayed No Time To Die, Daniel Craig’s last entry as James Bond, to October 8, 2021. That would have put No Time To Die at the same weekend as Morbius. With this release date change and an already crowded October that includes Dune and Halloween Kills, Sony has decided to delay the release of Morbius back another year.

Sony officially announced they’ve delayed the release of Morbius back to January 21, 2022. Morbius will now open over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend and is currently the only wide-release film dated for the weekend. This is the second major tentpole Sony has moved from 2021 to 2022 after the announcement Uncharted was pushed back to February 11, 2021.

Morbius has gone through several release dates. Sony first announced the project for a July 10, 2020 release date before pushing it back to July 31, 2020. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the studio decided to move Morbius out of the 2020 season to a projected release date of March 19, 2021. When it appeared that theaters would not be ready to open, Sony decided to move the release date back seven months to October 8, 2021. Yet now with a delay to January, this means the film is arriving in theaters eighteen months after the initial release date and over two years from when audiences saw the first trailer.

While Sony did move the release of Morbius twice, they have yet to move Venom: Let There Be Carnage out of its summer release date. Despite Morbius finishing production first and having long finished post-production, it appears Sony wants to keep Venom: Let There Be Carnage as their summer tentpole (for now, anyway). It also implies a sense of flexibility in the interconnectivity between films in the cinematic universe since one doesn’t need to come out before the other, meaning despite the Mobius trailer ending with the doctor meeting Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton) it appears that it wasn’t setting up an immediate crossover with Morbius in the upcoming third Spider-Man film. How Morbius connects to Venom: Let There Be Carnage and if it has any connection to the larger MCU at all is a mystery fans will have to wait a little longer to find out.
