High-quality images from the Mortal Kombat movie include a new look at the movie’s epic opening fight between Sub-Zero and Scorpion. The long-awaited big-screen adaptation of the popular video game series will be released on April 23 in theaters and on HBO Max in the USA. Mortal Kombat‘s release date was pushed back one week in late March, after originally being scheduled for April 16, a decision that was largely seen as a way of giving it and Warner Bros.’ big March release, Godzilla vs. Kong, some time to thrive on HBO Max without major competition.

After two poorly received movie adaptations in the 1990s, anticipation for Mortal Kombat is high, and the first trailer did not disappoint. Featuring a roster of classic characters from the games, the trailer also included a number of high-energy action scenes that, crucially, do not skimp on the blood and gore. Australian director Simon McQuoid, making his feature debut on Mortal Kombat, has promised the movie will live up to fans’ expectations, blending the classic fight action from the games with a story that focuses on newcomer Cole Young. And the visuals aren’t too bad either, as proven by a new batch of high-resolution images.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Warner Bros. has released a bunch of images in high resolution (via Collider) which includes a new look at Mortal Kombat’s opening fight between Bi-Han and Hanzo, otherwise known as Sub-Zero and Scorpion. There’s also a fresh look at Mileena, Kabal, and Shao Khan’s deputy Reiko, as well as better quality looks at some shots seen in the trailer. Jax, Sonya Blade, Liu Kang, Raiden, and Shang Tsung all get their own HD image, too. You can see all of the images below:

Given that producer Todd Garner has said the Scorpion and Sub-Zero conflict is at the heart of the movie, it’s no surprise that a new image of the pair’s opening fight leads the new images. The epic battle runs for Mortal Kombat‘s first 13 minutes and sets up the visceral and brutal story to come. Also interesting is the image of Mileena flanked by Reiko and Kabal. All three characters have only been seen in small glimpses so far, and this image gives a good look at them and their seemingly key roles as villains in the movie.

The rest of the shots are visually stunning, especially in HD, and show that the filmmakers certainly pushed the visuals in Mortal Kombat. Hopefully, the action and story match that quality, and audiences are treated to a great video game adaptation that wipes the memory of the schlocky 1990s movies from their memories. They’ll find out soon, when it releases on April 23rd.
