A fascinating Mortal Kombat animation creates custom fatalities in the nostalgic style of the series’ oldest entries. The brutal arcade fighting game series kicked off in 1992, and since then it has grown into a brutal and beloved franchise of games, animations and live-action films. Mortal Kombat’s violent Fatalities serve as iconic finishing moves, with each one demonstrating both its user’s unique skillset and the franchise’s love for bloody excess.

While the Mortal Kombat series’ modern entries focus on complex combos and extremely realistic graphics, the retro arcade franchise comes from humble origins. The very first entry in the ruthless saga featured only seven playable fighters to choose from, with each of them possessing a limited set of unique moves. Despite the 30 years of progress the Mortal Kombat franchise has made since then, many gamers are still nostalgic for the old-school 90’s titles that started it all. In an effort to resurrect these timeless titles for the modern age, a Mortal Kombat Trilogy remake petition recently called for the 1996 title to be reinvigorated within Unreal Engine 5.

Helping to keep the classic Mortal Kombat installments alive, Reddit user WeaponTheory recently shared a custom-built Fatality created using Flash 8. Ending a match between Cyrax and Kung Lao, the custom “V1RU5” Fatality sees Cyrax pump a number of massive germs into his helpless foe. The sickness then bursts out of Kung Lao’s mouth and flies into the air, before dropping back down onto him like a bizarre game of Space Invaders. WeaponTheory’s impressive YouTube channel features nearly 100 more animations, all of a similar style and created within Flash 8, with the creator’s oldest work dating back to 2007.

The Mortal Kombat fanbase has maintained a deep affection for the franchise’s first few arcade installments, with many of the series’ core kombatants being introduced in this early period. To capitalize on this enduring love for retro violence, a new Mortal Kombat arcade machine with free online multiplayer has been developed by Arcade1Up. The machine will contain the original Mortal Kombat, MKII, MK3 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, allowing gamers to celebrate the franchise’s 30-year anniversary in style. Owners will be able to face off against an online opponent as well, truly modernizing the classic arcade experience.

Alongside its memorable cast of colorful character, Mortal Kombat’s Fatalities are perhaps the most infamous and beloved aspect of the series. Each unique finishing move displays the power and personality of its specific kombatant, and the series’ penchant for graphic violence is put on full display during these match-ending onslaughts. WeaponTheory has managed to animate their own brand-new Fatalities in the style of old-school Mortal Kombat, displaying great creativity and adding to the legacy of those retro titles.
