After YouTuber MrBeast recently held a real-life Squid Game competition, mobile game sponsor Brawl Stars received a huge spike in popularity and downloads. The South Korean survival drama series took the world by storm when it was released on Netflix in September 2021, with its particular blend of graphic violence and social commentary drawing in viewers across the world. Squid Game‘s gauntlet of deadly challenges, though thankfully without the violence, was recently recreated in real life by YouTuber and video game fan MrBeast complete with a $456,000 cash prize as a reward.

Squid Game, created by South Korean film director Hwang Dong-hyuk, is a survival drama series where players must participate in children’s games with a deadly twist. Innocent schoolyard games like “red light, green light,” tug-of-war, and marbles are transformed into horrific life-or-death competitions, with losers mercilessly executed by mysterious masked attendants. Squid Game seeks to analyze the class disparity and poverty experienced by Hwang in his youth, as impoverished participants are drawn into the bloody games with the promise of a massive cash prize. While the hit Netflix series seems like a perfect set-up for a competitive multiplayer video game, no official interactive adaptation has yet been revealed. However, a playable Squid Game video game has been created by independent developer Farwal and released via the indie game website itch.io.

YouTuber MrBeast recently held a real-world version of Squid Game, and according to Sensor Tower, the event has led to a huge boost in sales for sponsor Brawl Stars. The multiplayer mobile battle arena title, developed by Supercell, was first released back in December 2018. The game pits players against each other in various game modes and features a variety of different playable characters to choose from. While Brawl Stars has not been a particularly popular title, its sponsorship of MrBeast’s Squid Game recreation has drastically improved its success. Brawl Stars saw a 41% increase in worldwide downloads since the November 24 event, and in-game spending has reportedly gone up by 54%. However, this attention may also be a result of the Brawl Stars World Finals competition, which began on November 26.

MrBeast’s recent Squid Game recreation has brought new levels of attention to the YouTube star, but his relationship to the video game industry goes back much further. His penchant for donating money led to the creation of a MrBeast charity skin in Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockoutthe popular battle royale platform game, back in December 2020. Developer Mediatonic held a charity costume contest last year which tasked fans with donating to SpecialEffect, an organization that helps gamers with physical disabilities, to win an in-game skin. A team consisting of MrBeast and other streams made a $1 million donation to the charity, which resulted in a Fall Guys skin inspired by the YouTuber.

With the novelty and success of MrBeast’s real-world Squid Game, it is no wonder that the event’s sponsors have received a spike in attention. Brawl Stars was launched back in 2018, but the mobile game has never been able to achieve the popularity of some other titles of its type. With MrBeast’s fascinating event giving a new level of exposure to the title, it seems that Brawl Stars may actually be Squid Game‘s most profitable winner.
