Mr. Robot starring Oscar winner Rami Malek is recognized as one of the best TV series of all time. The show’s unique storyline, coupled with Sam Esmail’s artistic shooting makes it an incredible watch.

The thriller series, quite recently, came to an end after the fourth and final season, and it was a satisfactory end to what was a mind-bending tale. Mr. Robot is full of surprises and known for its twists. So, over the course of the show, there were many scenes that were highly unpredictable. Hence, it’s only fair to take a look at some of them. Here are the ten scenes from Mr. Robot even fans didn’t see coming.

10 Whiterose’s Emergence

Whiterose, the leader of the Deus Group and The Dark Army, was a mystery for the first couple of seasons of the series. While she was doing some horrific things, no one could understand why. But during a flashback scene, Whiterose’s backstory was revealed.

Going by her name Zhi Zhang, Whiterose is in the States hoping to strike a deal with IBM. She is there with her secret lover and all of a sudden, she reveals to him that she is a transgender woman. When they are back in China, things suddenly change as Whiterose’s lover is forced to marry a girl whom he doesn’t love. Distraught by where his life is going, he kills himself in front of Whiterose, in an incredibly sad scene.

9 Tyrell Shoots Elliot

Season 2’s final episode culminates with Elliot figuring out what Stage 2 is all about. He finally gets to know what Mr. Robot and Tyrell have been doing and he is absolutely devastated to know it. That’s because Stage 2 is about cyber bombings and Elliot doesn’t want the blood of innocent people on his hand, even though his alter ego Mr. Robot has other ideas.

Elliot’s delusional nature makes him think that Tyrell isn’t real and that he is just a figment of his imagination. So, Elliot tries to undo whatever Mr. Robot has done to set Stage 2 in motion and of course, Tyrell doesn’t want that. Thus, he threatens Elliot with a gun and when Elliot doesn’t listen, Tyrell shoots him and almost kills the protagonist of the story.

8 Elliot Blackmails Olivia

In the series’ first three seasons, Elliot always seemed to be the good guy. But that changed when Elliot was trying to bring down Whiterose. He did something none of you might have seen coming.

In order to get some information regarding the Deus Group (who funded The Dark Army), Elliot blackmailed Olivia by drugging her through co. To put things in context, Olivia is a recovering drug addict who needs to remain sober if she has any chance of gaining custody of her son. It was a desperate and evil move. One which fans didn’t think Elliot was capable of. Olivia even tried to kill herself (she was saved by Elliot) and called Elliot a monster.

7 Did You Forget Who I Am?

The scene which gave Mr. Robot its unpredictable nature is this one. Whenever all seemed to be going well with Elliot, Sam Esmail used to drop a bombshell that would change the complexion of the series. Like this one when Elliot is about to kiss his sister Darlene and she asks him – “Did you forget who I am?”

The horror on Elliot’s face when he realizes that Darlene is her sister, coupled with the paranoia of him searching for himself in his locked away DVDs makes for a breathtaking scene. Not only does Elliot find his family but he also gets to know that Mr. Robot is none other than his father Edward Alderson (which is also not true).

6 You Knew All Along, Didn’t You?

After finding out Mr. Robot’s true identity, Elliot is shaken to the core and looks for answers. What he finds takes him and everyone watching by surprise as it is revealed that Mr. Robot is Elliot himself. Along with depression and paranoia, Elliot also suffers from multiple personality disorder, which is revealed in an incredible fashion. It’s quite similar to Fight Club’s reveal but not exactly the same.

At that moment, Elliot breaks the fourth wall and asks the audience watching – ” You knew all along, didn’t you?” This dialogue sums up Mr. Robot’s unique screenplay perfectly.

5 Not A House, But A Prison

Continuing on from what happened in season 1, when, without knowing, the audience betrayed Elliot by not telling him that he is, in fact, Mr. Robot, the vigilante hacker decided to hide some truths himself.

Season 2 starts with Elliot trying to keep Mr. Robot in check by following a strict routine in what seemed to be a house. But after some episodes of getting used to Elliot’s routine, he dropped a bombshell while talking to Krista as he revealed that he is in a prison and not a house. After the reveal, Elliot, quite cheekily, says that he hopes the fans will be honest with him from now on.

4 Leon Saves Elliot

Inside Elliot’s prison (which looks like a house to the audience), he only has one friend to whom he talks or rather he listens and that is Leon. Now, Leon is a movie buff and that’s all he talks about. So imagine the surprise when he turns out to be a killer working for Whiterose. And the only reason he kept an eye on Elliot was to protect him in prison.

This scene is very violent and it’s a one-off in Mr. Robot. Elliot is just about to be raped by some gang in the prison and at the right time, Leon arrives and kills five people with his knife. He also looks cool doing it.

3 Angela Killed

In the series’ fourth and final season, the first episode itself shook the audience. One of the show’s best characters, Angela was killed right at the start, much to the surprise of everyone.

The Dark Army killed her and Philip Price had a role to play in it. After Angela realized that Whiterose was offering false promises, she wanted to go after the leader of The Dark Army and she told that to Philip (his biological father). But, Whiterose was listening to the conversation through a mic and Philip was begging Angela to let it go and move on. As expected, Angela wasn’t having any of it and at that moment, she was shot dead.

2 Whiterose’s Suicide

One of the most unpredictable scenes in Mr. Robot is Whiterose’s suicide. After Elliot and Darlene succeed in exposing the Deus Group, Whiterose is about to be arrested and she goes on the run, specifically, to the Washington Township Plant where her plan is about to end.

She meets Elliot there and tells him that it is his choice whether he wants to end the society he hates or not. Then, quite remarkably, Whiterose kills herself, leaving Elliot and the audience shocked.  She didn’t even reveal what her machine was all about.

1 You Are Not The Real Elliot

As if the fans weren’t shocked enough that Sam Esmail had to make another startling reveal. After the explosion at the Washington Township Plant, Elliot wakes up in what looks like an alternate reality. There, he meets another Elliot, who isn’t a vigilante hacker that hates society.

At this moment, everyone watching has no idea about what’s going on. And then, Mr. Robot tells Elliot that he is just another split personality like Mr. Robot himself and that the real Elliot is trapped in this loop, which was made by him. As expected, Elliot crumbles after hearing the truth but in the end, he gives the control back to the real Elliot.
