Marvel Comics fans might know Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel, but before she took on the role, she was known as the hero Ms. Marvel. In a stunning new cosplay from artist and cosplayer Crystal Fae, Danvers’ forgotten costume she sported as Ms. Marvel is recreated in a mostly comic-accurate look that tweaked a few details of the character’s second look. The cosplay is inspired by Danvers’ forgotten costume only lasted a short time before she was given her most recognizable (and most criticized) Ms. Marvel costume.

Carol Danvers has been around for more than 50 years, first debuting in Marvel Super-Heroes #13 by Roy Thomas and Gene Colan. She became the hero known as Ms. Marvel after having her powers fused with Mar-Vell’s, which gave her incredible powers. However, despite being a popular hero, Marvel has changed the superhero moniker a handful of times. Danvers has been known as Ms. Marvel, Binary, Warbird, and Captain Marvel – with the latter name given to her in 2012, where Jamie McKelvie redesigned the character for Kelly Sue DeConnick and Dexter Soy’s Captain Marvel relaunch. The Captain Marvel title has stuck, but it took a long time for the hero to find the perfect name. Meanwhile, Kamala Khan has taken on the Ms. Marvel name, with Captain Marvel serving as her main inspiration.

Shortly after debuting as Ms. Marvel, and right before they gave her infamous swimsuit costume, Marvel Comics gave Carol Danvers’ costume a slight redesign, covering her exposed stomach, which didn’t make any sense from a practical standpoint. The new look made her costume more of a bodysuit and made her look less like she was wearing undergarments. On her Twitter account, cosplayer Crystal Fae shared her take on the forgotten ’70s costume, designing a comic-accurate cosplay that brings Carol Danvers’ Ms. Marvel ensemble to life.

The costume features many details from Carol Danvers pre-Captain Marvel costume, including her golden star logo on the red costume, which features black accents throughout. Crystal Fae caps off the look with a black pointed eye mask, and bright blonde hair that the hero has been sported by almost every iteration of the character.

Considering how some of Carol Danvers costumes oversexualized the hero instead of offering a practical costume, her oft-forgotten second costume nearly nailed the balance between sexy, but heroic. Thankfully, when the hero became Captain Marvel she her best costume to date. But, the Crystal Fae cosplay is a reminder that not all of her past looks missed the mark.
