My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 will honor the late actor Michael Constantine, says Nia Vardalos. Penned by Vardalos in her screenplay debut, the romantic comedy was released in 2002 and became an instant success. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, My Big Fat Greek Wedding boosted Vardalos’ comedy career and became one of the highest-grossing romantic comedies of all time.

Directed by Joel Zwick, My Big Fat Greek Wedding follows Fotoula “Toula” Portokalos (Vardalos), a young Greek-American woman who falls in love with Ian Miller (John Corbett), who is certainly not Greek. Featuring a stellar supporting cast, including Constantine as Toula’s Windex bottle-toting father Gus and Lainie Kazan as Toula’s mother Maria, the charming film spawned a short-lived TV sequel series, as well as a sequel film, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. Released in 2016, the sequel film focuses on Toula and Ian’s teenage daughter, Paris (Elena Kampouris), and saw the original cast return. Earlier this year, Vardalos announced that My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 was officially in the works.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Vardalos took to her Instagram to reveal that My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 will honor Constantine, who passed away last month. Reuniting with her co-stars from the first two films, Kazan, Gia Carides (Cousin Nikki), and Louis Mandylor (Nick Portokalos), Vardalos confirmed the script is finished. Vardalos revealed that Constantine informed her that he wouldn’t be able to join them for the third film and that “his wish was that we go on.” Vardalos went on to state that she “wrote the screenplay to reflect Michael’s decision.” Check out the full post that shows the reunited cast below:

As it stands, fans can expect the rest of the vibrant and lovable supporting cast to make a return for My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3. For now, Vardalos continues to keep plot details under wraps, but revealed, “And no Toula and Ian are not grandparents!” Indeed, Vardalos appears adamant about remaining true to her roots, and the roots of the titular family, by setting Greece as the official filming location for the third film.

Of course, Constantine as Gus Portokalos will be greatly missed. However, Vardalos has had time to reflect on the actor’s impact on her life and the films, and will no doubt pay a proper tribute to Constantine in My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3. While it remains to be seen if the third film will focus on the wedding of Paris, with Toula and Ian attempting to handle the upcoming nuptials of their daughter, it can be expected the third film will be an emotional ride. For now, fans of the first two films have a lot to look forward to with the upcomingMy Big Fat Greek Wedding 3.
