Warning: contains spoilers for My Hero Academia Chapter 313

Deku just had no choice but to do the unthinkable in chapter 313 of My Hero Academia: Wielding a new quirk for the very first time while using another. This situation is unprecedented on countless levels. Already, very few characters possess numerous quirks, so the vast majority of heroes and villains can’t even attempt to do something as crazy as this even if they wanted to. Of the few who can, even less, if any, have tried because of the danger involved. Unfortunately, Deku is forced to when Lady Nagant gives him no other option.

Deku is in this unfortunate predicament to begin with because All For One set his sights on obtaining his One For All quirk. To minimize the chance of his classmates getting caught in the crossfire, Deku went rogue and left U.A. High. But because he’s just a kid, All Might, along with the top three heroes–Endeavor, Hawks, and Best Jeanist–volunteered to keep a close watch on the rogue hero in training, and they were doing a pretty good job until Lady Nagant, another rare multi-quirk user, got involved.

It’s clear that All For One understood that Japan’s heroes would try to lure him out because it explains why he hired the hero traitor and assassin Lady Nagant to bring Deku in alive. So far, she’s been rather successful in not only isolating Deku from his guardians but also in forcing him to resort to using multiple quirks. And the reason why Deku has access to so many quirks is that he just so happened to get One For All at the right time. Plus, Deku naturally being quirkless helps.

Up until now, Deku has used Daigoro Banjo’s Blackwhip, Hikage Shinomori’s Danger Sense, and En’s Smokescreen; the fifth, fourth, and sixth One For All users, respectively. But because Lady Nagant can curve the trajectory of her bullets, Deku is coming under heavy fire, regardless of how much space he puts between himself and his pursuer. Even though Danger Sense is allowing him to dodge her bullets, Deku won’t be able to do so for much longer.

His best strategy is to use a combination of quirks. First, he releases En’s Smokescreen to create some momentary cover to set his plan in motion. Then he throws Gran Torino’s cape in the air to act as a diversion. Next, as Lady Nagant focuses all of her attention on Torino’s cape, Deku proceeds to summon for the very first time the third’s Fajin quirk, which releases the user’s internal power in an explosive manner, propelling Deku up into the air to grab Lady Nagant’s arm.

This is My Hero Academia presenting yet another example of how Deku has been thrust into situations that have forced him to make rash decisions. Just mere moments before attempting to summon the third’s Fajin, Deku releases so much Smokescreen that the sixth is compelled to materialize and mention that he is making a risky move. En should have realized, however, that trying to stop Deku would have been a fruitless endeavor because he’s already proven that he will do pretty much anything to do what’s right. Deku has gone head-to-head with Shigaraki and Overhaul on his own, and originally inflicted an insane amount of pain on himself just to summon One For All. Putting himself at risk doesn’t phase him at all. He’ll keep on doing so to ensure he becomes My Hero Academia’s number-one hero.
