The final battle in My Hero Academia Vigilantes continues to escalate, and this time it seems Koichi may have pushed himself to one of the rarest states of all: quirk evolution.

As the spinoff series is hurtling towards its conclusion, both protagonist Koichi Haimawari and his nemesis Number Six find themselves in rough shape. Six’s transformation into a giant flame monster seems irreversible, and Koichi’s injuries are pretty severe, to the point where he’s probably not doing much hero work after this. All for One has been observing the battle through Six, and much of chapter 118 is dedicated to his commentary on the battle. While initially unimpressed by Koichi’s quirk, All for One does start to notice something about it that piques his interest–it’s evolving.

In most cases, a person’s quirk is what it is. They might be able to find creative new ways to use it, accomplishing things that weren’t possible before, but that’s not a change to the quirk. A person can only change their quirk via one of three ways. The first is by obtaining a second quirk and seeing it blended together with the original, to create something new. Most people can’t handle a second quirk and wouldn’t be able to get one anyway, so it’s essentially not an option. This most famously occurred when All for One gave the stockpiling quirk to his brother, inadvertently creating One for All when it mixed with his existing “inheritance” quirk. The second method is through the Quirk-enhancing drug, Trigger; certain experimental mixes caused people’s quirks to go out of control, permanently altering the nature of their quirk. This happened early on in Vigilantes, and usually causes heteromorphic (mutant) qualities to manifest, so it’s not particularly desirable to most.

The last is quirk evolution, sometimes called “Awakening,” which has been noted before as being incredibly rare in the main series. The only known instance of this provably occurring was Himiko Toga’s quirk evolving to allow her to use the quirks of those she’s transformed into, instead of just taking on their appearance. Other characters, like Tomura Shigaraki, may have also undergone this process, but the extent of the experimentation on him makes it difficult to claim for certain. Quirk evolution is so rare because it requires the quirk user to be in major danger and experiencing a high degree of stress, and most people simply don’t experience life-or-death situations that often. An evolved or awakened quirk represents a substantial change in its power, rarity, or abilities. Because the process is so rare, it’s not known whether all quirks can evolve, or if only certain ones have this potential. Exactly what the awakening of Koichi’s quirk will offer him isn’t clear yet, but given the wide array of uses he’s found for it so far, opening up a new dimension of power is exactly what’s needed to end this fight.

It seems that in spite of how close the series’ ending is, My Hero Academia Vigilantes still has a few surprises left up its sleeve.
