There’s no shortage of heroes in comics or manga such as My Hero Academia, who mimic the iconic powers and abilities of Marvel Comic’s Spider-Man. However, unlike other titles, My Hero Academia’s version of Spider-Man, a hero known as Cellophane, surpasses the original in a number of key aspects.

Class 1-A member Hanta Sero (AKA Cellophane) may not get the attention of his more well-known classmates but that does not mean he is any less capable, courageous, or heroic than they are. In fact, unlike his classmates Deku, Shoto, or Bakugo, one of Hanta’s most important roles on the team is not even super-powered focused but rather based on his personality. He’s the type of person who gets along with everyone else, and so forms the hub of connections that serves to bind the team together.

Interestingly, while Hanta’s non-quirk power is facilitating social binding and stickiness, his quirk power is also based on stickiness albeit the kind that physically binds objects together. Specifically, as a result of his quirk, Hanta can shoot cellophane tape from two openings in his arms just below his elbows. The stickiness of the tape allows Hanta to perform the full range of Spider-Man’s web-based capabilities. For instance, Hanta can use the tape to wrap and bind opponents, create tape-web traps, and construct protective tape-based shields or other objects. In addition, he can shoot and swing with the tape like Spider-Man’s unique mode of self-propelled transportation.

While Hanta does not, and cannot mimic, Spider-Man’s proportional strength of a spider or his early warning “spider-sense” abilities, in all other aspects, his abilities surpass Peter Parker’s. First, there is the fact that Hanta’s taping is limitless. While over the years, Parker’s experience using webs has given him a good idea of how much web fluid he needs to carry on a normal mission, there is always the possibility that he may run out of web-shooter fluid. Meanwhile, Hanta can go into battle without fear of running out of his key ability. Another added ability of Hanta’s taping quirk that Peter does not have with his webbing is that Hanta has the ability to retract and otherwise redirect his tape. So, if an opponent moves after Hanta shots a bolt of tape, he can retract, recalibrate, and reshoot. Not only does this save on his use to tape expenditure, but also increases his ability to bind and trap others.

The most important difference though is Hanta’s ability to work well in groups and facilitate group-wide interactions in contrast to Spider-Man’s team-busting attitude. While fighting the individual villain is still a concern, in today’s multiverse environment, teaming up is increasingly becoming the rule, rather than the exception. Cellophane’s ability to harmonize the group’s consensus and support group initiatives, as opposed to Spider-Man‘s “lone wolf” approach, will more than likely be the difference between victory and defeat, at least in the My Hero Academia universe.
