There are all manner of strange puzzles in Myst, and the Selenitic Age features sound as a major component. It can be frustrating, especially for those with hearing loss, but to fully explore the game, players will need to solve the puzzles within.

When players enter the Selenitic Age in Myst, they are greeted by a brick building with something that looks like an intercom. It has five different sliders that play different sounds when moving them up or down. The player might be able to guess that they must play the right combination to solve the puzzle, yet they have no idea what the combination is, so it’s time to explore to look for clues.

Finding the solution to this puzzle takes the player around the island, and there is a definite theme. Players discover a series of microphones recording sounds from the environment. There are five in total, and they do something very important.

Solving the Sound Puzzle in Myst

The player must turn on all five of the microphones in Myst by pressing the red buttons below the symbols. These symbols will show up again later. It’s important to know that the player can find red and blue pages here. The red page is found at the microphone with the crystal, and the blue page is found at the microphone recording running water. Those can be returned to the corresponding books on Myst island to hear more of what Sirrus and Achenar have to say. Unfortunately, only one page can be picked up at a time, so after heading back to Myst, return to the Selenitic Age to get the other page.

At the microphone with the wind symbol is a passageway with a ladder leading down. Follow it, making sure to turn on the light switch at the bottom. On the other end is a machine with metal doors. Opening it reveals a machine with a screen and buttons. Some of the buttons have symbols matching the microphone recording stations. To solve this puzzle, the player must move the camera to face in the direction of each of the sounds by using the arrow keys. When they locate a sound, press the corresponding button. The arrows flash when a player is getting close.

The exact coordinates to each of the sounds are:

  • Water – 153.4
  • Fire – 130.3
  • Clock – 55.6
  • Crystal – 15.0
  • Wind – 212.2

After matching up the sounds to the buttons, press the sigma button on the bottom (Ʃ). If done correctly, the player is given the sequence to input into the intercom found at the beginning of the level.

Go back to the location of the intercom, and all the player needs to do is move the sliders until they hear the proper sounds. Going from left to right, they are crystal, water, wind, fire, clock. Then press the red button. If the combination is correct, it opens the door.

Follow the passageway to a vehicle that looks like a submarine, though it functions as more of a minecart. There is a maze, and while players can navigate by sound, they can get very lost if done incorrectly. So instead, here are the directions to go to escape the maze starting from the beginning. N, W, N, E, E, S, S, W, SW, W, NW, NE, N, SE. Navigating the maze correctly gets the player to the linking book so they can exit the Selenitic Age.
