Nathan Fillion is okay with not playing Nathan Drake in Sony’s long-awaited Uncharted movie. When a film adaptation of the hit Uncharted game series first went into development in 2008, Firefly fan favorite Fillion was among fans’ top choices to play rebellious treasure hunter Drake. He supported the idea as well and even encouraged it. In fact, he took things a step further in 2018 and starred as Drake in an Uncharted fan film. Fillion’s performance was very well-received, but it sadly didn’t yield a big screen role as Sony began to take the project in a new direction.

Instead of going directly off of the games, the Uncharted movie will be a prequel centered on a younger Drake. Tom Holland will play the explorer, with Mark Walberg stepping into the role of his mentor Sully. Even with a cast and a director (Ruben Fleischer) in place, Uncharted has taken a long time to get off the ground. After numerous delays, filming finally took place last year, and the movie is slated to premiere in February 2022. As that date has changed numerous times, though, fans might remain wary.

Fillion recently spoke to GAMINGbible about his latest movie, next week’s The Suicide Squad, and briefly touched upon his feelings about not being cast as Uncharted‘s Nathan Drake. Specifically, the actor was asked if he has any regrets about missing out on the role. Thankfully, he only has one, and it doesn’t have much to do with losing the part. Fillion said:

“My only regret is that we had to wait so very, very long for someone to do something so we could actually see some Uncharted stuff. Other than that, I think all my boxes have been checked. I’m pretty excited to see what they do with that. I love movies and those guys have never let us down; Tom Holland, come on, Mark Wahlberg. We’re gonna have a great time.”

Though Uncharted is in the past for Fillion, it’s still nice to know he doesn’t hold any resentment towards the project. There’s no question that Fillion would’ve been excellent as Nathan Drake; his role on Firefly appeared to set him up perfectly as an adventuring maverick. For many fans, he remains the ideal Drake, but Fillion’s support of Holland is sweet.

There’s some apprehension surrounding Uncharted because of its role as a prequel. As is evident from fans’ desire to see someone like Fillion play Drake in Uncharted, it isn’t clear if a younger version of the character will hold the same amount of excitement. Still, Fillion seems to think Holland’s movie will be what fans have been waiting for, so hopefully others come to feel the same. Only a handful of images and the tiniest bit of footage has been revealed from Uncharted, so much of the movie remains a mystery. Expect more updates to arrive in the coming months as the film finally inches closer to release.
