Nathan Fillion shares some hearty praise for Ryan Reynolds’ Free Guy performance in a recent social media post. Back in August, Free Guy became the breakout success of the year when it debuted to glowing reviews and a better than expected opening weekend at the box office. The movie stars Reynolds as Guy, a friendly video game NPC who starts to go against his code after meeting a player from the real world, Molotov Girl (Jodie Comer). However, when his do-good attitude runs afoul of the game’s owner (Taika Waititi), Guy and Molotov Girl must team up to save the virtual world they love.

Free Guy was something of a question mark as it neared its release. As an original movie without a streaming release during the pandemic era, many expected the Shawn Levy-directed project to underperform. Instead, Free Guy has demonstrated impressively long legs to count itself among the top 5 domestic earners of 2021. Reynolds has already confirmed that Disney is interested in a sequel, further signaling that Free Guy has managed to defy expectations in a big way.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Fans from all over have been able to share their enthusiasm for Free Guy, and now the movie has gained a prominent supporter in Nathan Fillion. Over the weekend, Fillion posted a lengthy tribute to the movie and Reynolds’ performance as the affable Guy. “I was 17 years old when I saw the first trailer for #FreeGuy, and now that it’s finally here, I can say it was worth the wait,” he quipped at first before getting into what he enjoyed about Free Guy.I experienced real joy watching this film, and you don’t have to be a video game nerd to appreciate it,” Fillion wrote later on in the post. Overall, it’s quite a commendation for the movie. You can see the full post below.

Interestingly enough, Fillion had a major movie arrive in theaters just one week before Free Guy. The Firefly actor made his DCEU debut as TDK in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, which also rolled out on HBO Max in the first weekend of August. Fillion has become something of a symbol for fan culture, so it’s quite fitting that he enjoyed Free Guy as much as he did. As he put it, though, the movie appeals to more than just video game fans, which is what makes it so enjoyable.

Should Free Guy 2 come to fruition, perhaps Fillion can score a cameo in it. The first movie was chock-full of crowd-pleasing appearances from those like Hugh Jackman and Chris Evans. Sequels often love to go bigger than ever, so one can assume that the next Free Guy will have to up the ante when it comes to Easter eggs and cameos. After all the kind words he just heaped upon the movie, it would be a lot of fun to see Fillion pop up alongside Reynolds’ Guy. Only time will tell if it ever happens.
