Netflix is developing Kiera Cass’ young adult novel The Selection into a film. Published in 2012, The Selection shook the young adult genre with a dystopian society setting and tackled themes such as poverty, familial strife, and women’s roles. The first installation in a five-book series, The Selection has sold more than 11 million copies and is revered for creating a message of empowerment for readers.

Now, the spellbinding fantasy is getting the adaptation treatment by the streaming giant. Netflix took to Twitter to reveal that filmmaker Haifaa Al-Mansour will helm the upcoming film The Selection. Best known for directing Mary Shelley and The Perfect Candidate, Al-Mansour has partnered with Netflix before on 2018’s Nappily Ever After.

The Selection is in the creative hands of producers Denise Di Novi (Little Women) and Divergent’s Pouya Shahbazian. As production of The Selection gets closer, more details will unravel, including the pivotal casting choice of the titular protagonist, America. Netflix appears adamant about keeping the YA book-to-film adaptation catalog stocked, as the streaming service currently has Cursed, There’s Someone Inside Your House, and Shadow and Bone in the works.

Set in the same futuristic dystopian society vein as The Handmaid’s Tale, The Selection follows America Singer, a young woman who’s part of an impoverished group of girls selected to compete for the change of a lifetime. Given the opportunity to vie for Prince Maxon’s affection and live amid the elite in a palace, America is among 34 girls thrust into a fierce competition. Ripped from her home, family, and relationship with secret boyfriend, Aspen, America finds herself forced into a tumultuous existence.
