Netflix CEO, Ted Sarandos, revealed the Squid Game series is expanding into a universe. Created, written, and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, Squid Game has become a global sensation and one of Netflix’s most popular series of all time. Season 1 of the survival thriller focuses on a deadly contest that involves 456 people from all walks of life who become players in a series of children’s games to win the ultimate cash prize.

Starring Lee Jung-jae, Jung Ho-yeon, Park Hae-soo, Gong Yoo, and Lee Byung-hun, Squid Game has solidified itself as a pop-culture phenomenon. Since the show’s debut in September of 2021, Netflix launched an official merchandise line, popular YouTuber MrBeast built a real-life Squid Game set, and the series has earned numerous accolades. Despite Squid Game eventually losing its number one spot on Netflix’s charts, it has maintained its popularity and looks to be opening doors for Western K-drama adaptation. Recently, Dong-hyuk revealed that Squid Game season 2 and season 3 were being discussed at Netflix.

Per Variety, Netflix confirmed Squid Game season 2 is officially in the works and teased a lot more is in store for the survival drama series. Speaking on the streaming service’s fourth-quarter 2021 earnings, Netflix’s co-CEO and Chief Content Officer, Sarandos, affirmed Squid Game has been renewed for season 2 and added, “The Squid Game universe has just begun.”

At this time, Jung-jae is expected to return as protagonist Seong Gi-hun for season 2. Squid Game season 1 ended on an ambiguous note, with Gi-Hun choosing to attempt to stop the next set of games instead of leaving on a plane to see his family. But, of course, Gi-hun returning to the arena could swing both ways and find the protagonist entering the deadly competition once more to sabotage the gameplay, or he becomes the new Front Man in a twisted turn of events. For now, it sounds like Netflix plans to expand the Squid Game storyline outside of the deadly arena.

Given the events that unfolded in Squid Game season 1, it can be expected that season 2 will have an entirely new cast aside from Jung-jae. At this time, Netflix has yet to reveal a potential release date for season 2. Creator Dong-hyuk workshopped his vision for Squid Game over a decade, and it’s unlikely Netflix will allot him that much time to deliver the next installment. Squid Game resonated with its audience for being so much more than a story about survival games, and it’ll be interesting to see how the mastermind behind the series will expand the Squid Gameuniverse.
