The new Netflix film The Harder They Fall contains a sweet tribute to the legacy of Chadwick Boseman. The film, which premiered today on the streaming service, is a neo-Western based on real-life historical figures and is one of a very small group of such films to have an all-Black principal cast. It’s a classical Western narrative about a man, famed cowboy Nat Love, avenging the murder of his parents by reuniting his former posse. Directed by Jeymes Samuel, The Harder They Fall stars Jonathan Majors, Idris Elba, Zazie Beetz, Regina King, Delroy Lindo, Lakeith Stanfield, RJ Cyler, Danielle Deadwyler, Edi Gathegi, and Deon Cole.

The iconic actor Chadwick Boseman is best known for playing T’challa, also known as Black Panther, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (including 4 films and 4 episodes of the Disney+ animated series What If?). He also played a series of prominent Black historical figures including Thurgood Marshall in Marshall, James Brown in Get On Up, and Jackie Robinson in 42. Boseman tragically passed away from cancer just over a year ago, on August 28, 2020.

On Strong Black Lead, one of Netflix’s official Twitter accounts, they shared a special tribute to the actor hidden within The Harder They Fall. The train in the film is named “C.A. Boseman,” after the actor’s full name: Chadwick Aaron Boseman. In this way, the film, which is specifically intent on keeping the stories of Black history alive, has immortalized the actor as an enduring piece of it. Check out the post below:

Chadwick Boseman made several movies with Netflix, including two of his final performances, in Da 5 Bloods and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. He was even nominated for a posthumous Best Actor Oscar for the latter film. He has also worked together with several members of the cast of The Harder They Fall on previous projects, including his Avengers: Infinity War co-star Idris Elba as well as Jonathan Majors and Delroy Lindo, who were both in Da 5 Bloods, so this tribute was a natural fit.

Additionally, although the film was originally scheduled to begin production in March 2020, production was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Filming got rescheduled to that September, just one month after Chadwick Boseman’s passing. The tragedy of his loss and the way it resonated for the Black community specifically makes this tribute in The Harder They Fall an especially fresh and poignant one that honors his legacy.
