Netflix sets the cast for the graphic novel adaptation I Am Not Okay With This. Based on Charles Forsman’s 2017 book of the same name, the series will chronicle the ups and downs of a 15-year-old girl named Sydney. Filming has officially commenced, and IT star Sophia Lillis has been cast in the main role.

I Am Not Okay With This will be helmed by Jonathan Entwistle. Previously, he adapted Forsman’s 2011 book The End of the F***ing World for a Channel 4 series starring Alex Lawther, Jessica Barden, and Gemma Whelan. Netflix co-produced season 1, and ordered a second season in August 2018. For I Am Not Okay With This, Entwistle will collaborate with co-creator, writer, and executive producer Christy Hall. In addition, Stranger Things producers Dan Cohen and Shawn Levy will also be part of the production in collaboration with 21 Laps’ Dan Levine and Josh Barry. The Young Adult supernatural series will consist of eight 30-minute episodes and will premiere in 2020.

Netflix has unveiled the full cast list for I Am Not Okay With This. Lillis will portray the series protagonist Sydney, a “sardonic” teenager who doesn’t get along with her mother or boyfriend, and discovers that she has telekinetic powers. She’s joined by IT and IT Chapter Two castmate Wyatt Oleff, who will play Sydney’s awkward neighbor Stanley Barber. Whereas Sydney views herself as “average,” Stanley exudes confidence that is “well beyond his years.” The main cast is rounded out with Sofia Bryant (The Good Wife) as Sydney’s closest friend Dina, and Kathleen Rose Perkins (You’re the Worst) as Sydney’s distant mother. ForI Am Not Okay With This season 1, both Aidan Wojtak-Hissong and Richard Ellis will have recurring roles.

Since starring as Beverly Marsh in IT, Lillis has accumulated a strong résumé and established herself as a promising actress. She plays the title role in the 2019 film Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase, and previously played a younger version Amy Adams’ character in the 2018 HBO series Sharp Objects. Next year, Lillis will appear as the famous Grimm brothers’ character Gretel in Oz Perkins’ theatrical reimagining of the story, Gretel and Hansel. In September 2019, the 17-year-old will appear once again as Beverly Marsh in IT Chapter Two.

Given Entwistle’s familiarity with adapting Forsman’s work, I Am Not Okay With This should be an improvement upon The End of the F***ing World. In addition, Lillis is a strong lead who will bring a large existing fanbase to the series. But despite her continuous pop culture buzz, the American actress may still be unknown to many Netflix subscribers. With I Am Not Okay With This, Lillis will undoubtedly become the platform’s next superstar, allowing for more feature film opportunities.
