Netflix’s Maid takes a close look at abuse, mental health, and poverty from the perspective of a very interesting cast of characters from all walks of life – and despite the series’ success, a second season has not yet been approved. It is known that Land’s original book ends at the same place as the series marking the final chapter of Alex and Maddy, but showrunner, Molly Smith Metzler, has said that she would love to keep writing Alex’s story.

Where it would go remains to be seen, but one plot point that is sure to make a return is Alex’s financial situation. Throughout the series, she, and others, struggle to get a foothold in society and it’s clear how that affects all facets of their lives. However, not everyone is equally affected – and some characters clearly hold more wealth than others.

10 Paula

Paula doesn’t start this show as the poorest character, but she certainly ends it that way. Despite her carefree attitude towards money (and most things in general), she is in dire financial straits.

From the beginning, Paula owns property and lives with her partner, Basil, in a trailer elsewhere. This means at one point she owned both a home and a trailer and, presumably, shared income with Basil. This would seemingly be enough to give her a little more money than at least some others, however, as the show goes on, it’s clear that Basil embezzles from her. He, illegally, rents out her home and doesn’t tell her about it and he lied to her about sending in mortgage payments for months resulting in her home being defaulted on and seized by the bank. By the end of the series, she is homeless, escapes a psych ward, and avoids care. The lone bright spot for her is the opportunity she has with her new boyfriend, Micah.

9 Danielle

Danielle is one of the best characters in the show, but she is also a bit of an enigma. One thing that is known about her is that she’s in a very similar position to Alex.

Alex meets Danielle at the domestic violence shelter in the second episode, which means she is also running from an abusive situation and had nowhere else to go. If not for the fact she returns to her abusive boyfriend and resumes living with him, she would likely be the least wealthy character. She appears in a later episode pretending not to know Alex because she is embarrassed that she is forced to be with him, which is tragic in its own right, but also means she’s doing a little better financially than the previous two.

8 Alex

Margaret Qualley’s Alex is the main character and begins as the poorest of them all. The series is driven by her lack of money as she struggles to provide for herself and her daughter.

At the start of the show, Alex has no job and decides to leave her boyfriend and primary provider, Sean. She takes her daughter, Maddy, in the middle of the night and quickly realizes she has nowhere to go. The graphic on-screen shows that she only has $12 to her name and she and Maddy are forced to sleep in her car for the night. Throughout the series, the audience is shown her net worth after several transactions highlighting just how poor she really is. She is also constantly forced to ask other characters for help as she does her best to earn some money to feed and house her child. However, by the end, she figures out how to make money on her own as a maid and eventually secures a scholarship to an accredited university.

7 Denise

Denise is one of the rare few people in this show who, seemingly, has her life together. She has a stable job and does not appear to suffer from any mental health problems.

Denise is tough, but fair, and helps Alex navigate her new life. Despite her stability, she is likely not making much money. The national average for domestic violence shelter jobs is around $48,000 annually. Granted this is purely speculative, there is not much money in social work. This means that Denise is on the less wealthy end of the spectrum.

6 Yolanda

Business owners are generally looked at as successful and wealthy people. However, that is not always the case. Some businesses struggle to stay afloat with many of their owners refusing to take a salary in order to keep the business going.

Yolanda is the, presumed, owner of Value Maids. Though there is no proof she owns the business, she is definitely the person in charge. She frequently talks about making money any way she can. Whether it’s forcing her employees to buy their own supplies or the comment she makes to Alex about taking money out of her own pocket when Alex steals a client. It’s clear she is personally invested in the business and that the business is not the most successful, which likely means she’s not in the best financial standing.

5 Ethan

Not much is known about Ethan except that he is Sean’s best friend, and dating Alex’s old friend, Tania.

It seems that he owns a trailer of his own, which means he at least owns property, which is not something most of the characters in this show can say. It also appears as though he used to work with Sean meaning he is likely a bartender or server and probably does pretty well for himself without a child or ex-spouse to support.

4 Sean

One of the three main leads, Sean is, predictably, also not the most well-off financially. Nonetheless, he is one of the most stable in the series.

At the start, Sean is a bartender at a fairly nice bar in the middle of town. Prior to the show, Sean was making enough to support himself, Alex, and Maddy, and he owned a trailer.  Compared to most other characters on this list, that is a lot of responsibility that requires a decent amount of capital. By the end, he is fired but is being trained to be a carpenter, which would allow him to join a union, in time, and be able to make a pretty decent living.

3 Hank

Alex’s estranged, recovering alcoholic, abusive dad is far from a positive role model, but he is one of the more wealthy people in this show.

By no means is he a traditionally “wealthy” person relative to people throughout the country, but within the scope of this show, he does seem to be more well-off. Even after divorcing Paula, he was able to buy a home, remarry, and support having twins. Even if he wasn’t the one to buy the house, he now shares his net worth with his new wife.

2 Nate

As one of the smartest characters, Nate is also one of the only ones who would be considered wealthy by most people’s standards. He is also the only one who constantly provides support to Alex when she needs it most.

After serendipitously running into her at the ferry terminal, he begins to incorporate himself into her life. He gives her rides, buys her food, gives her a car, and houses her and Maddy for a while. As a successful engineer, Nate is clearly quite wealthy. Even after his divorce, he is still able to own a large home, and a horse, and support his son, Brady, with excess.

1 Regina

The clear wealthiest person in the series. Regina is a high-powered corporate lawyer who eventually becomes friends with Alex and helps her out by giving her a regular job and setting her up with a colleague to help Alex move to Montana with Maddy.

Alex regularly cleans Regina’s home, which is evidently large. Her home is also in a wealthy neighborhood on Fisher Island and she drives a Mercedes Benz, which is notoriously an expensive car. In many ways, she is the opposite of Alex, which makes sense that they would be on near opposite ends of this spectrum.
