Netflix’s Windfall has an extremely limited cast, with just about every moment focusing on Jason Segel’s “Nobody,” Lily Collins’ “the wife,” and Jesse Plemons’ “the CEO.” Nobody has broken into the home of Collins and Plemons’ married couple, stolen some cash, the CEO’s Rolex, and locked the two in an outdoor sauna.

Things only get more heated from there, and all three cast members give equally proficient and intense performances. Fortunately, for those who are fans of the trio, there are plenty of past entries in their filmography that are well worth watching.

Jason Segel As Peter Bretter In Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)

Stream On Peacock

Forgetting Sarah Marshall had its fans when released, and it still holds onto them today. The reverence makes sense because on top of being one of the best romantic comedies of the 2000s, Forgetting Sarah Marshall is loaded with subtle details that make it rewatchable.

Peter Bretter ranks towards the top when it comes to leading male rom-com roles, not just limited to Segel’s work. He’s an individualist, an artist who loves his work and would rather keep that personal valuation over money. Sarah Marshall feels somewhat differently, and the film is a consistently funny examination of two lives whose paths are diverging.

Jason Segel As Sydney Fife In I Love You, Man (2009)

Stream On Paramount+

Sydney Fife will arguably always be the definitive eccentric Jason Segel movie role. The protagonist is Paul Rudd’s Peter Klaven, a middle-aged man with no friends, and Fife is the one who fills that gap in his life.

The movie’s charm is all about serendipity. Friendships, like romantic relationships, can’t be forced. Life happens naturally, and the two friends meet just like that at an open house. Before long the pair are playing Rush songs in Fife’s garage and Klaven is opening up as he’d yet to really do with anyone, including his fiance.

Lily Collins As Collins Tuohy In The Blind Side (2009)

Stream On Netflix

Lily Collins got off to a tremendous start in the industry via The Blind Side, which was received well by both critics and general audiences. Coincidentally, she portrayed a young woman named Collins, who is the daughter of Sandra Bullock’s character in the film.

The film follows Bullock’s Leigh Anne Tuohy (in a performance that won her the Academy Award for Best Actress), the matriarch of a white family that adopts future NFL offensive tackle, Michael Oher.

Jason Segel As Tom Solomon In The Five-Year Engagement (2012)

Stream On Hulu & Tubi

Easily one of Jason Segel’s best movies, The Five-Year Engagement is charming and compulsively rewatchable. Segel is in his element, but it’s Emily Blunt who steals the show. Toss in memorable supporting performances from Alison Brie and Chris Pratt and the Segel-Blunt film is a winner.

The film follows sous-chef Tom Solomon and Ph.D. graduate student Violet Barnes. They’re madly in love, but career aspirations keep getting in the way. Before they know it, years have passed and Barnes’ sister is marrying Solomon’s friend. Things have gone off the rails, but even after years of stress their love finally merges them legally. The Five-Year Engagement can be a stressful watch, but it’s very relatable and very funny.

Lily Collins As Snow White In Mirror Mirror (2012)

Stream On Hulu & Hoopla

Collins’ career has boomed in a relatively short period of time. She had The Blind Side in 2009, but then two lesser films in 2011 (Priest and Abduction). However, in 2012, she got the gig of playing Snow White in Mirror Mirror, where she was paired with A-lister Julia Roberts.

The film follows Collins’ Snow White as she contends with a malicious, undeserving queen for her rightful throne. With the help of some highway robbers (all of whom are small in stature), Snow White makes her way back home to reclaim it.

Jason Segel As Jay In Sex Tape (2014)

Stream On Tubi

Sex Tape received a reputation that wasn’t entirely fair. It was immediately chastised for being an attempt to piggyback off the success of Bad Teacher. However, Segel and Diaz’s second collaboration has its merits and even has the funniest moment about amateur Disney paintings ever committed to film. The leading pair do seem as if they’re only half in the proceedings, but supporting performances from Ellie Kemper, Rob Corddry, and Rob Lowe sell the whole experience.

The 2014 movie was Segel’s last cinematic comedy to date, but his appearances on Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty inspire hope that he’ll soon be back in movies like Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

Jesse Plemons As Gary In Game Night (2018)

Rent On Vudu

John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein’s writing partnership has created a mixed bag of projects. After hitting the gold mine writing Horrible Bosses, they had a miss with The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. However, they then wrote Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, which was seen as an improvement over an already surprisingly impressive original film.

Then they took on Vacation, a continuation of the National Lampoon franchise starring Chevy Chase. They then took on their biggest project to date: co-writing Jon Watts’ Spider-Man: Homecoming. Then they hit further comedic gold with Date Night, which is every bit as entertaining as Horrible Bosses while also featuring more maturely-written and fleshed-out characters. This one includes Jesse Plemons as an unsettlingly oddball neighbor of the protagonists.

Lily Collins As Edith Bratt In Tolkien (2019)

Stream On FXNow

Before watching Lily Collins in Emily in Paris, fans would do well to give Tolkien a shot. Like the Netflix show, it’s a lavish production with outstanding performances, even if it doesn’t hit its mark as often as Paris.

It’s a biopic of the legendary J.R.R. Tolkien, specifically geared towards his years prior to writing The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit. Collins portrays Edith Bratt, Tolkien’s muse and future wife, with whom he’d be until his death.

Jesse Plemons As Chuckie O’Brien In The Irishman (2019)

Stream On Netflix

Starring in a Martin Scorsese epic is a great get for any actor, and the role of Chuckie O’Brien is a very interesting one. The self-proclaimed foster son of Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino), O’Brien’s best scene involves swiftly disarming a gun-toting assailant in a courtroom.

Jesse Plemons makes O’Brien one of his best roles because he strives to make the man relatable. Compared to other characters in the epic, O’Brien gets the short stick in terms of screentime, but he’s a welcome presence, which is apparently quite different from his real-life persona (though it was never officially proven that O’Brien was responsible for Hoffa’s murder).

Jesse Plemons As Prince Joachim In Jungle Cruise (2021)

Stream On Disney+

Disney’s star-studded adventure fantasy Jungle Cruise was a moderate box office success and an overall fun time at the movies. Like Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl before it, Jungle Cruise was based on a Disney theme park attraction.

The film follows Dwayne Johnson’s Frank Wolff, a steamboat captain who takes Emily Blunt’s botanist, Dr. Lily Houghton, to find a particularly magical tree that could revolutionize modern medicine. Plemons played Prince Joachim, a German who leads a group of mercenaries towards the very same “Tree of Life.”
