Fans of Mindy Kaling couldn’t wait to check out her new Netflix comedy, Never Have I Ever, which has been available for streaming since April 27th 2020. Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) wants nothing more than to be popular and have a fun time at school, but she has a lot going on in her life. She struggles with her Indian-American culture and identity, and she lost her dad and the use of her legs in the same period of time.

Devi has a big year ahead of her and she has many goals, including dating Paxton Hall-Yoshida (Darren Barnet). The series is hilarious and intelligent, and the characters say a lot of great things. Read on to find out the best quotes from the first season of Never Have I Ever.

10 “Now you may be asking yourself why is sports icon John McEnroe narrating this tale? It’ll make sense later I promise.”

When people start watching Never Have I Ever, they quickly learn that the show is narrated by John McEnroe, the famous tennis player. This is a great quote because he says exactly what people are thinking: why is this happening?

Although voiceovers don’t always work, this narrative device is really clever in this case, especially since it’s so surprising.

9 “I’m going to the movies with my friends. Which pair of jeans is the fiercest?”

This quote is said by Rebecca (Lily D. Moore), Paxton’s sister, and it’s perfect for the moment. It’s definitely one of the best quotes from the first season of Never Have I Ever.

Devi looks a bit shocked at first to hear jeans being called “fierce” but like anytime someone uses this kind of popular slang, this quote is a mixture of funny and surprising.

8 “We are smart. And idiots are banging all the time. We can learn how to do it, too.”

Fabiola Torres (Lee Rodriguez) says this quote when she, Devi, and Eleanor Wong (Ramona Young) are talking about sex. It’s just such a perfect quote for a high schooler to say, especially someone who doesn’t run with the popular crowd and has no experience.

Many people thought this way back in high school and wondered if they would ever have any dating experience. This is so relatable.

7 “And I am American actor, producer, writer, fake rapper: Andy Samberg. What can I say? I wear a lot of hats.”

If it was a surprise to hear a famous athlete narrating the show, it was also a big deal to hear Andy Sandberg narrating the episode “… been the loneliest boy in the world” which focuses on Ben Gross (Jaren Lewison), Devi’s biggest enemy at school.

Andy Sandberg is always hilarious, whether part of the Lonely Island or starring as Jake on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, so this is one of the best quotes from the first season since he’s so charming.

6 “I could never be a model. I’m too curvacious.”

Devi’s cousin Kamala (Richa Moorjani) is beautiful but has a great personality and sense of humor, too. This quote is hilarious since she doesn’t realize what she’s really doing: bragging about herself.

The fact that she’s oblivious to the fact that she’s giving herself a compliment is pretty great.

5 “I found a Bollywood movie about a princess who falls for a lowly street sweeper. It’s only seven hours long.”

This is another perfect quote from Kamala. Everyone’s reaction to this was exactly the same: a seven-hour movie is way too long. It was clear that Devi was thinking, “No way. I’d rather watch literally anything else.”

Even though Devi isn’t thrilled about her gorgeous cousin living with her and her mom, she does bond with her while watching Riverdale, which is funny and moving.

4 “If women didn’t accept each other’s apologies, The View would grind to a halt.”

Devi says this quote and it couldn’t be more accurate. It’s not necessary to see any episodes of The View to know that the co-anchors tend to argue quite a bit.

It’s a little surprising to hear a teenager make a reference to The View since it seems like the audience for that show would skew older, so this proves that Devi does have moments of maturity even though she can be pretty silly a lot of the time.

3 “In protest, I shan’t use my legs either.”

When Devi can’t use her legs anymore and is going through an incredibly tough time, her friend Eleanor says this quote, which is so great.

Eleanor is a budding actress who can’t approach a situation without being super dramatic. The quote is followed up by Eleanor literally falling onto the floor of the school hallway, which works well.

2 “I’m a godd*** delight! I should punch you in the Adam’s Apple for saying that.”

When Ben insults her personality, Devi says this in response. It’s totally hilarious and not what viewers would expect her to say.

Devi has a huge temper and that’s something that the series explores. She can’t help but get pissed off when someone says something that she doesn’t like, even if she’s at school and it’s not exactly the right environment for a tantrum. This quote also hammers home the fact that Devi is still young and has a lot of growing up that she needs to do.

1 “No cocaine for me, thanks. I’m good.”

Devi says this early on in the series and it’s hilarious and pitch-perfect. A lot of high schoolers can relate to this sentiment. It’s nice to be included and to have the option to turn something down.

This quote may be funny but it’s also important since it proves that even though Devi is on a journey to try to be popular, she still has principles and wants to stay true to herself.
