Behind the scenes pictures of Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series reveal a peek at one of the sets. Few shows have stirred up as much debate and excitement as the live-action Avatar has before it’s even been released. First announced back in 2018, the new series will adapt and reimagine the beloved Nickelodeon animated series that followed 12-year-old airbender Aang, the last remaining hope for his war-torn world. The animated Avatar is widely regarded as one of the best kids shows of all time, so expectations are high, particularly since the previous attempt to turn it into live-action, M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender, is an infamous misfire among fans.

For Netflix’s Avatar, newcomer Gordon Cormier will play Aang. He’ll be joined by Kiawentiio and Ian Ousley as Katara and Sokka, respectively, Aang’s best friends and partners in his world-saving mission. Meanwhile, the fan favorite role of Prince Zuko is filled by Dallas Liu. Other cast members that have been recruited for Avatar include Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Maria Zhang, Ken Leung, Elizabeth Yu, and Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai. Avatar doesn’t have any kind of premiere date just yet, but as production still seems to be ongoing, an early 2023 debut isn’t out of the question.

Thanks to Reddit user Dripmaster926, fans now have been granted a peek at one of Avatar‘s sets. Set against a green screen backdrop, new set images reveal what looks like the entrance to what will presumably be a much larger building when CGI is added. The details and coloring give the impression it could be a Fire Nation fortress or some other kind of location within the country, though that could later prove to be an incorrect theory.

The Netflix Avatar show reportedly has a budget of $15 million per episode which, while perhaps not as expensive as the Marvel shows on Disney+ or Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, is no small price tag. A majority of that will likely be going to special effects and production design, with the former needed to make the bending believable. As for the latter, locations like the Northern Water Tribe and Omashu should be appropriately grand even as they shift from animation to live-action. Netflix is clearly putting a great deal of money into Avatar, so perhaps there doesn’t need to be much concern over these elements.

From the small glimpse offered by the new Last Airbender set photos, it does look like the Netflix creative team is putting real thought into how these locations should look. The detailing on the constructed set looks solid from even far away, an though it will likely be bolstered by CGI, even just a small amount of practicality is nice to see. What action will take place on this set remains to be seen, but audiences will find out when the live-action Avatar finally arrives.
