Comic book artist Dan Schkade just added a hilarious twist to a classic Batman cover. Detective Comics has been running for more than 80 years, and naturally there are many iconic covers. Like all creatives, comic artists like to pay homage to works that have inspired them or that they love. This was recently seen in the variant cover for Batman ’89 #1 by Mico Suayan, which paid homage to Jim Lee’s very first cover for DC Comics. Likewise another cover was made in the same style for Superman ’78 #1.

Schkade’s artwork takes influence from Detective Comics #448 by Len Wein, Ernie Chan and Dick Giordano with covers by Jim Aparo. This issue sees Batman taking on Ra’s al Ghul who, in the previous issue, frames Batman for killing Talia al Ghul, his daughter. However, it’s revealed that she’s alive. As Batman and his allies escape from a burning building, Batman is shockingly shot in the back by Jim Gordon, which is also depicted on Aparo’s cover art.

Dan Schkade, known for his Eisner Award-nominated Webtoon series Lavender Jack, tweeted his own genius spin on Jim Aparo’s iconic Detective Comics #448 cover. The original cover showcases a step-by-step progression as the characters come closer and closer to the foreground. It’s quite a gripping image, there’s not much mystery to why it’s become iconic. None of the characters actually die, it’s a trick that was manufactured to set up Batman as a murderer. In the cover art, Batman shoots Talia and Gordon shoots Batman, and that’s where Schkade’s hilarious fan art comes in.

It takes Aparo’s cover a step forward as Gordon becomes the one being shot in the back, after Batman moves off frame. This time, it’s the cops who were slightly trailing behind Gordon who are the trigger men. It then progresses to be an insane panel that is sure to make every reader laugh. The police car behind the officers are the next ones to take out the foreground’s subject. The car pummels into the two cops, sending them flying into the air. It’s an extremely neat and funny piece of fan art that perfectly pays homage to the initial cover’s humor and amps it up a notch.

Many comic book creators make fan art on their favorite characters in their free time, this was seen recently with Sasha Calle’s Supergirl costume being drawn by many different artists. Here, Schkade has fun with Detective Comics‘ classic cover, and shows how it could even be taken a step further. The car in the foreground is being trailed by another cop car that could conceivably continue Aparo and Dan Schkade‘s themes as the back car smashes into the front car, in the same usual fashion. It might just be one of the best, funniest pieces of Batman fan art ever.
