Warning: Contains spoilers for Dexter: New Blood episode 8.

In Dexter: New Blood episode 8, the Dexter revival brings back an old Vince Masuka joke and references other characters, but there’s no sign the characters themselves will return. The original Dexter ran for eight seasons and relatively few characters made their way through all eight. However, that isn’t to say that the characters who died before the final season’s conclusion didn’t have a lasting impact on the Dexter narrative.

Dexter: New Blood episode 8 sees Angela Bishop (Julia Jones) pursuing her hunch about Dexter’s real identity. After learning more about his dealings with the drug dealer Miles (Dakota Lustick) and the death of the supplier Jasper (Kellan Rhude), she begins to scour the internet for connections between the Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) of Miami and the use of ketamine in Iron Lake. While she learns about the Bay Harbor Butcher, the search results also name drop several key characters from the original seasons of Dexter.

When Angela searches on Google for “Dexter Morgan Miami Homicide” in Dexter: New Blood, the results appear to include snippets from his obituary in The Miami Tribune. These note that he worked alongside Vince Masuka, a mainstay from the original Dexter who appeared in all eight seasons as Dexter’s forensics colleague, played by C.S. Lee. The first snippet refers to Masuka as the “Lead Forensics Investigator,” a title that he was bestowed by Special Agent Frank Lundy (Keith Carradine) in Dexter season 2 during the Bay Harbor Butcher investigation. Throughout Dexter season 2 (and beyond) Vince Masuka repeatedly boasts of the title, and the title is played for humor as Masuka occasionally becomes jaded that Lundy is sidelining him from the investigation for being creepy. The fact that Masuka’s obsession with the title of “Lead Forensics Investigator” became so prominent as to appear in Dexter’s obituary is one of the more farcical moments of the often darker Dexter: New Blood.

While Dexter: New Blood name-dropped Vince Masuka, with only two episodes remaining in the revival series it seems unlikely that C.S. Lee will be making a surprise cameo. Dexter: New Blood did create compelling reasons to include cameo appearances from David Zayas as Angel Batista and John Lithgow as Arthur Mitchell/The Trinity Killer, and brought back Jennifer Carpenter as Debra Morgan in a recurring role. However, finding a way to insert Vince Masuka into Iron Lake, NY would be too difficult and ultimately only serve as fan service.

Two other key names are dropped in the Google snippets from Angela’s Dexter: New Blood searches and both might be more viable for a serious cameo appearance. One is Sergeant James Doakes (Erik King), who took the fall for the Bay Harbor Butcher killings. He was always right about Dexter being “off” and his Dexter season 2 exit lacked justice that could be paid off by a cameo as a vision in Dexter’s mind. Similarly, Maria Laguerta (Lauren Vélez) is mentioned as Dexter’s captain at Miami Metro. Like Doakes in Dexter, she died unjustly at the end of season 7 when Deb shot her after Laguerta learned the truth about Dexter. This scene ultimately led to the controversial ending of Dexter season 8 where Dexter escaped without significant consequence and a cameo from Laguerta could help to give her justice and provide Dexter: New Bloodwith the final ending it deserves.
