The main setting in New Girl was the loft where Jess, Nick, Schmidt, and Winston lived, but at one point, Schmidt decided to move out only to return a couple of episodes later – but why? One of the most popular sitcoms in recent years is New Girl, created by Elizabeth Meriwether. New Girl premiered on Fox in 2011 and lived on for a total of seven seasons, coming to an end in 2018 after a lot of ups and downs in the lives of the characters as well as many unforgettable jokes.

New Girl introduced the audience to Jess Day (Zooey Deschanel), a young, bubbly but clumsy teacher who found out that her boyfriend was cheating on her. Jess moved out of the home they shared and through an online ad found three strangers looking for a roommate. Although some of them were initially reluctant to let her stay, they ended up welcoming her in, and after a sometimes shaky period of adjustment, Jess became very close to her roommates Schmidt (Max Greenfield), Nick Miller (Jake Johnson), and Winston (Lamorne Morris). New Girl allowed viewers to get to know its main characters quite well, and one who became an instant favorite was Schmidt, but his actions also left a lot of questions.

Nick and Schmidt were the first residents of the loft, moving in sometime after college, but they weren’t always roommates. Schmidt and Nick met in college when Schmidt casually arrived at Nick’s room and became his roommate, and after that, they were pretty much inseparable (though the timeline of their stay at the loft is a bit confusing). However, New Girl season 3 saw big changes at the loft when Schmidt decided to move out, but he returned a couple of episodes later. Schmidt’s short time at another apartment left viewers with a bunch of questions that go from why he decided to leave the loft and his friends in the first place and what exactly made him return.

By the time New Girl season 3 began, Schmidt couldn’t decide between Cece (Hannah Simone) and Elizabeth (Merritt Wever), and he eventually ended up alone. This double break up left Schmidt devastated, and in episode 6, titled “Keaton”, he found out that the e-mails he had been receiving for years from Michael Keaton (yes, Batman) weren’t real and were written by his mom and later Nick, which only added to his broken heart. Schmidt then decided to move to the apartment across the hall as he “entered a new chapter in his life”. A couple of episodes later, in “Sister III”, he spent all of his money on a storefront for Abby (Jess’ sister, played by Linda Cardellini), and so he had to move back to the loft with the rest to sublease his apartment. Schmidt’s departure made way for the return of Coach (Damon Wayans Jr), who even dated Cece at one point in New Girl season 3, and Schmidt’s return added an extra dose of chaos to the loft which was now too crowded.

Schmidt moving out of the left in New Girl season 3 and coming back shortly after didn’t make sense for most viewers, and some even forgot about that part of his story, and the reason for taking him out of it might have been to make way for Coach’s return. As to why Schmidt moved back to the loft so fast, it’s unknown if the writers realized having Schmidt on his own wasn’t working for the show or it was always planned that way, with the purpose of adding more humor and chaos to the loft which by then had one too many residents.
