TikTok has added the voice of horror icon Ghostface as an option for its text-to-read function, allowing users to use the voice of the Scream killer. The option was added ahead of the fifth installment of the Scream slasher series, which is set to release in January 2022. Roger L. Jackson’s iconic knife-wielding masked killer has been a recurring image in the series since the 1996 original film.

In the original Scream, Drew Barrymore’s Casey Becker’s quiet evening of horror films is cut short when she receives a mysterious phone call from a stranger, soon revealed to be the Ghostface Killer, murdering Casey and kicking off the events of the film. Ghostface is later revealed to be both teens Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) and Stu Macher (Matthew Lilliard), who had been disguising their voices with a voice changer in a revenge plot on Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell). Despite takes by voice acting legend Tom Kane being considered by director Wes Craven for the killer’s cold, menacing voice, ultimately the director decided to choose the original lines recorded by Jackson, cementing his voice in horror history as a terrifying icon.

Now, as part of a promotion for the upcoming Scream sequel film, the film’s official Twitter account revealed that TikTok posts can now include Jackson’s Ghostface voice, as part of the app’s text-to-speech function. After users have filmed clips and added a caption through the text tool, it’s now possible to select the Ghostface killer’s voice to read out the caption by tapping the text and selecting the “Scream” voice. In order to help users access the creepy new voice option, the official Scream account posted a helpful video that goes through the process step-by-step. Check out the tutorial clip below:

Despite David Arquette, who has portrayed Woodsboro Police Department deputy-turned sheriff Dewey Riley,  admitting that he’s never met Ghostface’s voice actor, Jackson has been present throughout each installment of the Scream franchise. Due to the twist that both Billy and Stu were killers who had been using a voice changer to hide their identities, Jackson was able to reprise his role in each of the subsequent films, as new characters took up the Ghostface mantle using the same tricks the original pair used. Jackson will reprise his role in Scream, as another killer steps into the Ghostface costume to once more terrorize Sidney and the town of Woodsboro.

Ghostface’s text-to-speech voice on TikTok is the latest piece of promotion for the upcoming Scream sequel, following the launch of the Woodsboro Horror Film Club page on Facebook. While that page was intended to share information and trivia about the film, this latest promotion is perhaps the most fun and interesting so far. Not only does it allow fans to use the iconic Ghostface voice in their content, but can be seen as a fun nod to how the voice was artificial in the film. Now, much like Billy and Stu, fans can use Jackson’s recognizable voice for their own devious purposes. And though audiences don’t know the killer’s identity in Screamyet, fans can look forward to Jackson’s return as the iconic villain in voice form at the very least.
