A report that circulated recently claimed there was a new game in development based on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and if this proves to be true, a prequel about Bastila Shan would be a perfect next entry in the series. There are no details on the alleged project, except for it not being a product of an EA studio, but it would be the second of two Star Wars: KOTOR games currently in development, the first being Aspyr’s remake of the original RPG from BioWare. Because KOTOR has since been de-canonized by the Disney acquisition of Lucasfilm, there are plenty of routes a new game could take, but one focusing on Bastila would be a perfect segue to reignite the series.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Bastila was the most important side character of the original Knights of the Old Republic, and served as a Jedi mentor for the player character, the once-powerful Sith Lord Darth Revan. During Revan’s journey to find the Star Forge and recover their memories, Bastila herself goes through a significant character arc, which involves falling to the Dark Side and joining Darth Malak, KOTOR‘s primary antagonist. Bastila only appears very briefly in KOTOR 2: The Sith Lords, in a holographic message stored within T3-M4, and at the very end of the game. Regardless, >KOTOR‘s headstrong Jedi Bastila Shan remains a fan favorite.

Prior to her stint with Revan, Bastila was a notable Jedi because of her mastery in a Force power known as battle meditation. She was one of the few Jedi who mastered the ability, which boosts the morale and battle prowess of allies, while simultaneously stunting those of enemies. Because of this, Bastila was an incredibly valuable asset to the Republic’s effort in the Jedi Civil War started by Revan and Malak’s return from the Unknown Regions in command of a Sith fleet.

Bastila Can Help Canonize KOTOR’s Jedi Civil War

If the reports of a brand new Knights of the Old Republic story turn out to be true, Bastila is the perfect place to start a fresh look at the Old Republic. She’s a well-known character who is already inextricable from the events which will be retold in in the KOTOR remake. Although Star Wars‘ new High Republic complicates KOTOR‘s timeline, it’s possible that the remake will canonize Darth Revan and company. Unless there’s drastic changes to the game’s plot, this leaves Bastila in a convenient position to star in a prequel.

Her role in capturing Revan is briefly told in Knights of the Old Republic, but could be the climactic finale to a game that expands upon the Jedi Civil War. With her battle meditation, she would have played an instrumental part in rebuffing the Sith invasion. Especially on the heels of the remake, following up with an elaboration on Bastila’s journey seems like it would be a smart move. It would give players the rare chance of fighting with many Jedi companions against an equal number of Dark Jedi. With a remake that hopefully doesn’t flop, the future for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is incredibly bright, and Bastila Shan has a chance to re-enter the spotlight.
