New photos from Stargirlseason 2 show the Shade and Green Lanter’s daughter, Jade. Created by Geoff Johns, Stargirl centers on the escapades of the titular superheroine Courtney Whitmore, a character that Johns modeled after his late sister who tragically passed away in an aviation disaster. Courtney, played by Brec Bassinger, is a high-school sophomore who acquires supernatural abilities after discovering a cosmic staff that once belonged to legendary hero Starman. With her newfound powers, Courtney inspires a group of misfits to form a new Justice Society of America, and together they successfully foil the plans of the evil Injustice Society of America, killing its leader, Icicle, in the process.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Stargirl had originally debuted as a part of the originals lineup of the now-defunct DC Universe streaming service. But only a day after its premiere on the video-on-demand platform, the show also began airing on The CW, with a new episode releasing every Sunday. Then, in July 2020, when the show was only midway through season 1, The CW exclusively renewed it for a second season, which has since been scheduled to arrive on August 10, 2021. A third season has also already been ordered. At the moment, details for Stargirl season 2 are slim, aside from the fact that it will be darker and deeper than the freshman run and that it will introduce a new JSA legacy character in the form of Green Lantern’s daughter Jade (Ysa Penarejo). But now, some new images from the forthcoming show have surfaced, giving fans an idea of what to expect from season 2.

TV Line has revealed several exclusive first-look photos from the upcoming second season of Stargirl. The images offer glimpses at various old and new heroes and villains from the series, while also briefly indicating what the various characters are up to in the show. One of the pictures confirms the return of Joel McHale, who presumably is the real Sylvester Pemberton/Starman. Another shows Pat (Luke Wilson) detailing the full history of the golden-age JSA to its new recruits, including its more contentious aspects. The Shade (Jonathan Cake) is also there in the images as he pays a visit to Barbara (Amy Smart) at her American Dream office. Finally, the last photo finds the main heroes reacting to Jade’s arrival in Blue Valley, and it appears as if Courtney doesn’t get off on the right foot with her. Take a look at the pictures below:

Although the new images tease quite a lot about Stargirl season 2, there are certainly some key characters that are missing. One is the villain Eclipso, Nick Tarabay’s terrifying and physically imposing antagonist who, in season 1, was contained in the diamond that Cindy Burman/ Shiv (Meg Delacy) stole from William Zarick’s storage unit. Johns has confirmed that Eclipso will have an essential role in season 2, and recently a grisly poster also showed what the nefarious agent of chaos would look like. The Shade and Eclipso are, however, not the only baddies that will appear in season 2. Rather, there will also be the returning villain Solomon Grundy, who will wreak havoc for Courtney. As for the brighter side of things, John Wesley Shipp will reprise his Arrowverse role as Jay Garrick, aka The Flash, from the Golden Age of superheroes.

Until recently, there was only scant information about what Stargirlseason 2 has in store for the audiences. But with the new images, a lot has become clear, including what the dynamics will look like between Jade and the JSA, and how the Shade will come into conflict with Courtney. After the defeat of the ISA in the season 1 finale, it looked like their crime-fighting days were behind the superheroes. But as the images show, events will gradually unfold in season 2 and new threats will arise, prompting Courtney and her JSA allies to spring back into action. That said, season 2 will hopefully also expand on the lore of the original JSA members, describing fully their fallout and internal conflicts and revealing if any (or all) of them are still alive and out there.
