A teaser image CD Projekt Red shared has fans of The Witcher thinking the next game will revolve around the School of the Cat. With regards to the games, in particular, Witcher faithful best know the Cat School because of the Cat School gear set in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. But this school boasts more importance in the larger mythos than slick-looking Feline Witcher gear, especially when it comes to a certain Lady of Space and Time.

Established after a group of students rebelled against their masters, the Cat School consists of a motley crew of members from diverse backgrounds. This ragtag band of misfits also counts among the few Witcher Schools that will actually allow women to join its ranks. Apart from the gear that players can find scattered around the open-world map, the School of the Cat does not receive much airtime in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. However, developer CD Projekt Red’s recent tease for the next mainline Witcher game suggests the interactive universe will deeply explore this part of the mythos in the future.

Following the recent game announcement, it didn’t take long for fans like Reddit user File_LD203 to hypothesize that CDPR’s new Witcher entry will revolve around the Cat School. This theory stems from the fact that the teaser image appears to place a Feline Witcher medallion front and center. Of course, the seemingly subtle image bears larger implications, too, given Ciri’s loose connection to the Cat School in Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels and The Witcher 3.

In The Lady of the Lake book, Ciri faces off against a bounty hunter hired to kill her – Leo Bonhart – who previously collected medallions from the Witchers he defeated, one of whom belonged to the Cat School. Ciri takes the Cat School medallion for herself after slaying Leo in combat. While The Witcher 3 never directly references this event, the top-left corner of the UI shows a Cat medallion instead of a Wolf during Ciri’s playable sections.

There does exist one wrinkle in the fan theory, though – the Witcher medallion in the teaser does not resemble the Cat School emblem shown in The Witcher 3. Rather, its shape bears more in common with that of a lynx’s head. Since the popular RPG specifically labels the Cat School gear as “Feline,” it’s possible the lynx medallion featured above still somehow ties into Cat-based mythos. It also seems probable that CDPR’s teaser photo hints at the creation of a new Witcher School.
