Nicolas Cage has intrigued fans regarding his next performance, after a recent image showed the actor with a completely shaved head for his role in Butcher’s Crossing. The Hollywood star is known for his many wild and wonderful roles, and Cage has once again surged in popularity in recent years for his bold performances in various cult classic films. In 2021 alone, Cage has starred as a truffle hunter determined to rescue his prized stolen pig in Pig, had his genitals explode in eccentric Japanese auteur Sion Sono’s Prisoners of the Ghostland, and warded off a hoard of murderous animatronics in Willy’s Wonderland.

Now, a new photo (via Deadline) shows Cage with a completely shaved head for his role in the upcoming Western, Butcher’s Crossing. The photo shows the newly-bald star with a rugged demeanour and winced expression. Butcher’s Crossing, based on a 1960 John Williams novel, follows a young Harvard student who leaves his conventional life behind to join a team of buffalo-hunters headed by the zealous Miller (Cage). Not much else is currently known about the frontier epic, but it is currently being shot in Montana. The film is also being directed by Gabe Polsky, who is best known for his 2014 Soviet ice hockey documentary Red Army. Check out the full image of Cage below:

From the image alone, Butcher’s Crossing promises grit, as Cage’s scratched and bruised face does not look to be that of someone to be messed with. As would perhaps be expected, buffalo hunting was an arduous and perilous pursuit only undertaken by brave people. Any fans of the original novel will know that Miller’s character fits this description. Most celebrated in recent times for his more unrestrained and unhinged performances, particularly in Panos Cosmatos’ hallucinatory, chaotic 2018 revenge thriller, Mandy, Cage’s portrayal as Miller will come with some high expectations.

Whether the film will be of any particular merit is yet to be decided, but the role of Miller appears to be perfect for the dynamism of Cage. While some have argued that previous characters that seemed to be in Cage’s exact wheelhouse have ended up coming across as lazy and derivative, the actor’s films and performances are always interesting to say the least. For now, this first look at the bald, rugged Nicolas Cage is all audiences have to go on in when it comes to Butcher’s Crossing.
