Warning! Spoilers ahead for Future State: Gotham #11

In DC Comics, Nightwing has finally figured out two of the biggest mysteries in Future State: Gotham. Set in a possible future where Gotham has become even darker as a fascist state policed by the organization known as the Magistrate, Dick Grayson has been leading a resistance movement of what remains of the Bat-Family along with some new allies. However, there have been notable figures who have gone missing: Bruce Wayne’s Batman and his son Damian. While those who have read DC’s Future State are aware of what happened to Batman, the whereabouts of Damian Wayne’s Robin have been a huge question mark for Gotham’s heroes and readers alike. Now, it seems Nightwing has cracked the code in the latest issue of Future State: Gotham.

In DC’s Future State, it was revealed that the original Batman was attacked by the Magistrate early in their takeover, resulting in an opportunity for Bruce Wayne to fake his death so he could work in the shadows against them as the Dark Detective. However, the truth about Bruce’s “demise” is not widely known and it’s generally assumed by his own Bat-Family that he did indeed die. However, no one knows what happened to his son Damian Wayne who had been the current Robin.

Now, Future State: Gotham #11 from Dennis Culver and Geoffo sees Nightwing agreeing to help Talia al Ghul find her missing son using a new enhancement drug derived from Bane’s classic Venom compound (strengthening the mind rather than the body). As such, Dick Grayson risks the potential side effects in order to uncover the truth. In a dynamic explosion of color, breaking the series’s monochromatic color palette, Nightwing and Talia’s risky experiment to solve the mysteries of the future seemingly works as he finally gains insight into Bruce and Damian’s whereabouts.

Unfortunately, Nightwing passes out at the end of this issue before he could reveal where Damian and Bruce are. It seems as though the side effects of the Brane compound took a toll on Dick Grayson’s mind (which had been a concern). Seeing as how Nightwing now knows about both Waynes’ whereabouts, the possibility exists that the former Batman and Robin could be working together to bring the Magistrate down in secret. However, Damian could have easily fallen into trouble while being on his own as well.

Assuming that Nightwing can recover and recall where Damian and Bruce are in this future timeline, it’s going to be interesting to learn what happened to his fellow Robin. Damian has never been mentioned in past Future State titles until now, so it’s pretty exciting to see that Future State: Gotham is right on the cusp of finally solving the major DC mystery. Furthermore, Nightwing and the rest of the Bat-Family will likely have a wide range of reactions once they learn that the original Batman is still alive in future issues from DC Comics.
