A recent leak suggests that even more Nintendo-based LEGO sets are going to be released in 2022, with eight reportedly due this summer and one later in the year. The latest partnership between Nintendo and LEGO began back in 2020 with the reveal of LEGO Super Mario, a customizable game set that combines traditional LEGO with a high-tech Mario minifigure that plays sounds from the games and keeps track of the player’s score as they move the lovable plumber through LEGO versions of classic Mario locations like Bowser’s Castle. Later expansions would bring Mario’s hapless brother Luigi to LEGO, as well as add costumes that grant Mario special abilities just like they do in the games.

Aside from the LEGO Super Mario sets, Nintendo and LEGO have also produced sets based on Mario’s iconic Question Block and even the original NES console itself. At the time that LEGO Super Mario was first coming out, LEGO Creative Play Lab Design Manager Jonathan Bennink expressed a desire to branch out into other Nintendo properties like The Legend Of Zelda and Donkey Kong, and fans have also been pitching set ideas through LEGO Ideas based on Kirby’s Dream Land, Wii Sports Resort, Zelda, Nook’s Cranny from the Animal Crossing series, and more.

According to VGC, information regarding nine new Nintendo-based LEGO sets was recently leaked by Eugene Toy and Hobby under the code name “Leaf,” though this listing has since been removed. Likewise, German LEGO fansite Promobricks listed set numbers and list prices for these supposed sets last year, consisting of 71403 at $59.99, 71404 at $9.99, 71405 at $19.99, 71406 at $29.99, 71407 at $79.99, 71408 at $129.99, 71409 at $69.99, 71410 at $5.99, and 71411 at $229.99. It remains unclear exactly what these sets are, but it is believed that they will consist of more expansions for LEGO Super Mario – with 71411 possibly being another large starter set in the vein of the original Super Mario Adventures set or last year’s Super Mario LEGO with Luigi. Promobricks claims that eight of these sets will release sometime in August, while the biggest and most expensive of them will hit stores in October – though none of this has been officially confirmed by LEGO as of this writing.

Nintendo is far from the only video game company crossing over with LEGO for physical sets based on some of their most popular properties, as SEGA and Activision Blizzard have also joined forces with the famous Danish building toy brand for Sonic The Hedgehog and Overwatch sets over the years. Meanwhile, Minecraft LEGO continues to be a popular range. Sony and LEGO also recently announced a massive Horizon Forbidden West LEGO set modeled after the towering Tallneck machines, complete with an Aloy minifigure. On the reverse end of the spectrum, Traveler’s Tales’ popular line of LEGO-based video games has continued since 2005, with LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga set to adapt all nine mainline Star Wars films later this year.

So far, the partnership between Nintendo and LEGO has yielded great success in the form of LEGO Super Mario and its various expansion sets, and it seems that the line will continue well into 2022. It’s not clear yet if these leaked LEGO set numbers correspond to more LEGO Super Mario sets or if LEGO is finally going to give fans those long-wished-for Legend Of Zelda and Star Fox models. LEGO and video game enthusiasts might have something to look forward to this summer all the same.
