It’s now possible to customize your own avatar on the Nintendo Switch with the new Missions and Rewards feature. Earlier this week, Nintendo released an update for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. On top of getting access to online gaming and a variety of classic Nintendo titles, it’s now possible to complete weekly challenges for some extra coin. Custom avatars are displayed online for other players to see and help them find small ways to represent themselves online. Before this event, only a handful of Nintendo properties like Mario, Zelda, and Animal Crossing have had avatars. Now, players can choose which items they’ll want to unlock.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

This is all part of the Nintendo Switch’s new Missions and Rewards function. From the main menu, players should navigate to the Nintendo Switch Online icon on the bottom left of the screen. This will open a new tab, and a list will appear on the left. Players should select Missions and Rewards, and there will be lists of Nintendo Switch Online-related tasks that reward Platinum Points. These were used to claim special rewards from the MyNintendo website, like exclusive wallpapers, discounted games, and other physical collector’s items. Now, they can be used to purchase custom avatar items.

In the Missions and Rewards tab, players will need to select the red stamp icon on the top-right of the screen to find the active missions. Options will be broken into two different sections: missions that can be completed with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, and missions that can be done without one. These tasks can include Play Super Mario Bros and Back-Up Save Data and will give 50 Platinum Points as a reward. These can then be used to purchase avatar icons in pieces.

Purchasing Avatar Icons on The Nintendo Switch

Currently, only Super Mario Odyssey and Animal Crossing have Nintendo Switch avatar items for players to purchase. In the case of Super Mario Odyssey, players can purchase icons for Peach, Mario, and tons of Bowser’s minions. These will remain until April 4 at 6 p.m., when new rewards will be rotated in. Character icons will cost 10 Platinum Points while Background will cost only five. After purchasing one, players should select the profile icon on the top left of the Nintendo Switch Online page.

Here, players can start mixing and matching their own icons to create whatever design they like. Each color and character will need to be purchased individually. There will be a preset list available, plus an option for players to create their own. It’s a small change that goes a long way in helping players represent themselves online. Even if players aren’t fans of Mario or Animal Crossing, it’s likely other popular Nintendo franchises will be added in the future.
