The latest free update to No Man’s Sky was revealed in early August, marking the most recent of many large changes that the game has undergone since its release. Although excited fans are already speculating what the most recent addition could bring, here’s all the concrete information that’s been revealed thus far about the upcoming Frontiers update.

Since its controversial launch in 2016, No Man’s Sky has undergone over a dozen free updates, transforming from a game that failed to meet many of its promises to a fully-realized spacefaring experience full of new activities and quality-of-life improvements beyond what was initially teased. Further console and even VR ports have expanded the game’s player base significantly, as well, and it doesn’t seem as though No Man’s Sky‘s additions and improvements will be slowing down any time soon.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

To mark the game’s fifth anniversary, Hello Games released a celebratory trailer to look back on how the game has changed since its release, highlighting the biggest features of its various updates and hinting at the future of No Man’s Sky. The biggest of these hints was a confirmation that the game’s 17th update, titled Frontiers, will be coming at some point in the future. Beyond that, though, what’s actually known about No Man’s Sky: Frontiers and the gameplay changes or additions it could introduce?

What’s Known About No Man’s Sky: Frontiers So Far

Unfortunately, the trailer was vague at best in terms of what No Man’s Sky: Frontiers will actually bring to the game. In fact, little other than the update’s logo was shown. It’s difficult to even speculate on what the logo might be hinting at, as well, given the vagueness of its design: Frontiers logo includes a crescent moon, but not much else in the way of distinguishing features. A concrete release date likewise wasn’t provided for the update, although it’s said to be coming “soon.” On August 9, in a post on the official PlayStation blog, Hello Games’ founder Sean Murray went on to state that the future of No Man’s Sky is “not far off,” which seems to confirm Frontiers‘ release date will indeed be sooner rather than later.

The rest of the blog post was equally vague about what No Man’s Sky: Frontiers will be adding to the game, although Murray describes it as a “missing piece” of its sci-fi fantasy elements. This could perhaps indicate that Frontiers will introduce more magic-esque elements to its gameplay. It could also be a story update, allowing players to experience additional narrative plotlines or quests. There are, after all, many questions about No Man’s Sky‘s universe that have yet to be answered.

Either way, if the update is indeed coming in the near future as hinted at, it’s likely that more news will be coming out soon as well. Fans of No Man’s Sky should keep an eye on Hello Games’ official site and social media for updates. For the time being, though, speculation is all that can really be done regarding the future of the game.
