The Emergence Expedition for No Man’s Sky is a story-driven expedition that incorporates narrative elements throughout as travellers seek to exterminate dangerous sandworms. This is No Man’s Sky’s fourth expedition and it comes just in time for Halloween. Expeditions were first added to the game back in March as part of No Man’s Sky’s Expeditions update, and they are a game mode that revolves around online multiplayer, cooperation, and Milestones. Parties start their adventure at a specific place in the universe and must work together to complete challenges and achieve Milestones, a series of open-ended exploration goals.

Last month, Hello Games dropped its third expedition for No Man’s Sky titled “Cartographers.” That expedition tasked participants with mapping and exploring their surrounding terrain so they could escape the planet Gisto Major, which was plagued with a toxic atmosphere. Alongside Expedition 3, No Man’s Sky’s Frontiers update added procedurally generated settlements in inhabited star systems. Players can influence and oversee these settlements and even found their own. While Expedition 3: Cartographers gave players a unique questline to complete, tasking players with fixing their technologically unique starship to evade the toxic atmosphere, the expedition did not contain narrative elements. Neither of the three previous expeditions added to the game’s overarching story, but that changes with Hello Games’ fourth Expedition update.

According to No Man’s Sky, Expedition 4: Emergence is the next seasonal event for the space exploration game, and it drops today, October 20. The Emergence Expedition will run over the course of Halloween and will be the game’s first-ever story-driven expedition. The update also adds “a host of enhancements for across the game,” including richer particle effects and thematic rewards. The Emergence Expedition strands travellers on the planet Wasan, which is a world “ravaged by dust storms and infested with Titan Worms.” Travellers must locate the impact sites and exterminate the Hungering Tendrils, collecting Vile Spawn to purge the world of the dangerous behemoths. Though it seems like a Dune crossover, the update is not an official collaboration with the franchise.

Expedition 4: Emergence adds narrative to the game which players will begin to unravel as they complete their mission to rid Wasan of Titan Worms. Completing the expedition route reveals the history of a dark cult spread across the universe. Travellers will need to confront Atlas, providing evidence of the dark cult which is said to be an “indelible stain” on the universe.

The narrative-driven components to the latest expedition are another step forward for No Man’s Sky’s redemption story. After releasing a game that ultimately divided fans at launch, Hello Games has made consistent improvements to its procedurally generated universe in an effort to both reignite and maintain its community’s passion for space exploration. With No Man’s Sky’s plethora of updates and improvements, many fans do agree that Hello Games is achieving its goal.

The Emergence Expedition for No Man’s Sky continues the trend of significant updates to the five-year-old game. Beyond its narrative elements, the seasonal expedition also adds more for players to explore, like rideable sandworms and the Flesh Launcher firework among other noteworthy changes to the controversial title.
