No Way Home Already Spoiled Aunt May’s Death – Theory Explained

The Spider-Man: No Way Hometrailer may have spoiled Aunt May’s tragic death, showing it’s the end for the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The latest No Way Home trailer revealed several details for the MCU’s upcoming Spider-Man film. In addition to Alfred Molina reprising Doc Ock, Thomas Haden Church bringing back Sandman, and Willem Dafoe taking on Green Goblin again, the trailer shows the villains don’t recognize Tom Holland’s Peter Parker as Spider-Man. This reveals the criminals are definitely from other universes. Additionally, Spider-Man seems to want to save the villains’ lives, but Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) says it’s their fate to die.

In addition to bringing in numerous characters from past Spider-Man films, No Way Home has several returns as well. Peter Parker’s love interest, MJ (Zendaya), and best friend, Ned (Jacob Batalon), return and wind up in trouble in the latest trailer. Additionally, Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) and Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) come back to keep an eye on Spider-Man amid the chaos. And after a surprise appearance in Spider-Man: Far From Home, J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons), the head of The Daily Bugle and a leading force turning the public against Spider-Man, also shows up in the trailer.

Despite all its wild revelations, the No Way Home trailer may also reveal a sad death. Halfway through the trailer, there’s a scene of Spider-Man diving to try to stop a bomb from the Green Goblin. Unfortunately, it appears that the deadly device is just out of Spider-Man’s reach, and the bomb explodes before Tom Holland’s Peter Parker can do anything about it. Later, the trailer features a scene of Aunt May running, and the lighting and the environment look similar to Parker’s earlier scene with the bomb. Though the trailer breaks up the clips of the moments, the video may hint that it’s teasing Aunt May’s death.

If Aunt May does die, it could fulfill a significant Spider-Man scene. The MCU’s Spider-Man franchise skipped over Peter Parker’s superhero origin story, never genuinely giving the character a moment with Uncle Ben at his death, which propels Spider-Man to be the hero he becomes. However, if Aunt May would die in the series, it could turn into a twist on Uncle Ben’s death scene. Tom Holland has said that the film feels like the franchise’s end, so it will likely include tragic deaths. Though the trailer cleverly separates the Aunt May scene from the Spider-Man/bomb scene, the lighting and the background may give away that Aunt May is getting Uncle Ben’s moment.

Of course, the theory is far from confirmed. Marvel often tampers with its trailers, removing characters and faking moments to throw fans off. Similarly, the lighting could be another trick, and Aunt May could get through the movie fine. Plus, Uncle Ben has already seemingly died in the films. It just happens off-screen. However, with Uncle Ben’s death scene being a pivotal part of the Spider-Man origin story and Aunt May being the most significant parental figure in the life of Peter Parker’s Tom Holland, it’d make sense to give her the scene. It’d be a powerful moment, but Aunt May could handle the responsibility in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
