Jon Watts opens up about his biggest fears in directing Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield together in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Returning for the third time to the MCU to round up its Spider-Man trilogy, the filmmaker entered the franchise in 2017 via Spider-Man: Homecoming. He followed it up with the game-changing movie, Spider-Man: Far From Home, which leads to his latest blockbuster that brings together all three eras of live-action Spider-Man movies.

Admittedly, Spider-Man: Far From Home set up a very different threequel, and screenwriters Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna belatedly shared that the original Spider-Man: No Way Home narrative didn’t involve the multiverse. But, eventually, they decided to change course and make it the blockbuster’s focal point. This allowed characters from Sam Raimi and Marc Webb’s Spider-Man movies to appear, such as villains like Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock, Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, and Jamie Foxx’s Electro. The involvement of Garfield and Maguire’s respective Spider-Man versions, however, wasn’t revealed until the film hit theaters.

Long before their appearance was confirmed, rumors were persistent that Maguire and Garfield would indeed be in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Now, Watts opens up about the process of bringing all three live-action Spider-Man iterations together on the big screen in a new interview with Variety. When asked if he feared anything taking on the massive task, the director shared that he was the most afraid of missing a great moment and not being able to include it in the film itself. Watts said, “The only thing I was nervous about is that I’d miss something great. As a director, you always keep your eyes and ears open.”

The fact that the actors had great chemistry was beneficial for the movie itself, but it probably worsened Watts’ fears of missing a good moment among the trio. He also revealed that before filming Holland, Maguire and Garfield’s very first scene together, he and the actors huddled to talk about the work they were going to tackle. According to the director, it was exciting for him as he was able to see how dedicated each of them were in doing their respective roles in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Since the movie has been out for a while now, both Holland and Garfield have also opened up about their experience and have spoken about the great time they had filming the project. In fact, both are eager to team up again in the future with Maguire. If that ever happens, the question is whether or not Watts will be involved again to spearhead the project.

At this point, Spider-Man 4 is already in active development, but it’s unclear when it might come out or who it could be its director. But even if Watts doesn’t return to helm it, he will remain in the MCU by directing the upcoming Fantastic Four film. According to reports, this will be his next project after Spider-Man: No Way Home, so it might not be long before he’s back on set again, planning Marvel’s first family’s introduction.
