The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang wants series star Norman Reedus to become the new Ghost Rider. Reedus has played Daryl Dixon on AMC’s long-running zombie apocalypse drama since the series’ beginning in 2010.

Of course The Walking Dead is currently slicing and dicing its way through its epic eleventh and final season. But the character of Daryl is expected to still have a future beyond the end of TWD season 11, as there will reportedly be a new spinoff centered on Dixon and Melissa McBride’s Carol. Reedus of course has long had his eye on one particular other plum role as well, that of Marvel Comics character Ghost Rider, the motorcycle-riding flaming-skulled anti-hero played on the big screen by Nicolas Cage. There have indeed recently been reports that Marvel has settled on a new actor for Ghost Rider, but the identity of that actor has not yet been revealed.

It remains to be seen if Reedus is in fact the one who has been tapped to play Ghost Rider in the MCU, but at least one person is in his corner when it comes to landing the role. In a tweet, TWD showrunner Kang endorsed the idea of Reedus joining the Marvel universe, saying “Just saying… Norman Reedus as Ghost Rider WOULD be rad.”

Reedus may have competition for the role of Ghost Rider however as Gabriel Luna, who played the character on Agents of SHIELD, recently threw his own hat in the ring to continue holding down the role in the MCU. Keanu Reeves is also someone fans seem to like for the role and Reeves has previously confirmed meeting with Kevin Feige about a possible place in the MCU. As for Reedus, in July the actor reiterated his own desire to play Johnny Blaze, saying “The Ghost Rider conversation has been coming up for years, and yeah, tell them to put me in it.”

Reedus indeed would seem like an ideal actor to play Ghost Rider given his gritty persona and noted motorcycle-riding skills. And it’s also fortunate that with The Walking Dead season 11 heading toward a wrap, he will soon have a long period of availability, assuming the Daryl and Carol spinoff doesn’t start shooting right away. That showrunner Kang is so enthusiastic to endorse him would indeed seem to indicate that the TWD universe can spare Reedus at least for a little while. Of course Ghost Rider isn’t even confirmed for the MCU yet, but hopes are rising as edgier Marvel characters like Blade begin to make their way into the traditionally family-friendly cinematic universe. It seems there is a decent chance now that the crazy Johnny Blaze could actually find a home in the MCU, and there no doubt will be a lot of actors lining up to land that particular role when it comes time to cast.
