Norman Reedus celebrates a filming wrap for AMC’s The Walking Dead with a throwback video from season 1. Based on Robert Kirkman’s comic series of the same name, The Walking Dead has amassed a gargantuan following since its television debut on Halloween in 2010. For nine seasons, the series followed the walker-killing ex-deputy Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) as he led a group of survivors through a perilous, post-apocalyptic world. When Lincoln’s character left the series in season 9, The Walking Dead positioned Reedus’ hunter/tracker extraordinaire Daryl Dixon as one of Alexandria’s de facto leaders.

Before The Walking Dead, Reedus was best known for his role as Murphy MacManus in The Boondock Saints (1999). The Walking Dead has adapted many characters from the comics, but the series has also managed to create original characters and Daryl Dixon is easily the most resonating among them. The fan-favorite was written specifically with Reedus in mind and now Daryl and Carol (Melissa McBride) are the only survivors from season 1 still present in the final season. The Walking Dead announced that season 11 had officially wrapped filming on all 24 episodes on March 31, 2022.

Reedus recently took to Instagram to celebrate the series wrap of The Walking Dead and thank everyone who “took this ride with us.” The 53-year-old actor posted a video of himself and McBride singing, mirroring Daryl and Carol’s close onscreen relationship. He also shared a photo of himself with Michael Rooker, who played Daryl’s brother, Merle, for The Walking Dead’s first three seasons. Check it out below:

The series may be coming to an end in season 11, but Daryl will live on. Piggybacking off Fear The Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: The World Beyond, multiple additional spin-offs have been announced, including Isle of the Dead, featuring Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), and Tales of the Walking Dead. A spinoff following Daryl and Carol was also announced in October 2020 and will see Reedus and McBride reprise their roles, though it has yet to receive a release date or title.

The Walking Dead‘s current showrunner, Angela Kang, has said that the Daryl and Carol spin-off was discussed long before season 11. The departure of characters like Rick and Michonne (Danai Gurira) teased that there is a lot more story to tell in The Walking Dead universe. Naturally, those stories would include beloved characters like Daryl. While the upcoming spinoffs and/or Rick Grimes movies may take away from the finality of The Walking Dead’s last season, the flagship series sets the precedent for succeeding projects. The Walking Dead continues to air new episodes every Sunday on AMC, which are available to stream a week early on AMC+.
