Disney’s Obi-Wan Kenobi brings actor Ewan McGregor back to the Star Wars universe, and it may finally explain Owen Lars’ strange insult at the “crazy old man.” The Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer shows Ewan McGregor’s title character during his years of exile. Kenobi appears to live like a hermit, watching a young Luke Skywalker from afar and avoiding the Empire’s grasp. John Williams’ “Duel of the Fates,” from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, is the soundtrack to the trailer, harkening back to the prequel trilogy. And though Obi-Wan Kenobi’s mission is to stay hidden, the series teases that he won’t stay that way for long.

Besides McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi, the series brings back several Star Wars characters. Among the returns, Joel Edgerton’s Owen Lars appears in the trailer, watching over a young Luke Skywalker and facing the harsh reality of the Empire hunting down Jedi on Tatooine. Hayden Christensen also returns for the series, hinting at an upcoming rematch with Obi-Wan Kenobi. The series also borrows the Grand Inquisitor from Star Wars Rebels, with Rupert Friend bringing the character to life in live-action.

Besides explaining mysteries from Obi-Wan Kenobi’s exile, the series can also reveal why Kenobi and Lars don’t appear to be on the same page. In Star Wars: A New Hope, Lars and Kenobi don’t seem fond of each other. When Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker suggests that R2-D2 could belong to Alec Guinness’ Obi-Wan Kenobi, Phil Brown’s Owen Lars calls him a “crazy old man.” Kenobi seemingly returns the insults, telling Luke Skywalker that Owen Lars didn’t want him to have his father’s lightsaber or follow Obi-Wan on a “damn-fool idealistic crusade.” The series can finally explain why the pair don’t see eye-to-eye.

Obi-Wan Kenobi and Owen Lars’ dislike for each other never made much sense. At the end of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, both Kenobi and Lars seem cordial towards each other, and Kenobi trusts him enough to leave Luke in his family’s care. But then A New Hope shows the pair aren’t on the same page regarding Luke. Obi-Wan Kenobi seems to want Luke to have his father’s weapon and know about his past. Lars is dead set against that. Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer scenes show Lars looking apprehensive as the Empire searches for Jedi, so the series seems like it will finally explain his tense relationship with Obi-Wan.

Of course, there could also be more of an understanding between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Owen Lars. Given how Luke’s father, Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, turned to the dark side, perhaps Obi-Wan won’t be keen to train young Luke Skywalker either. If that were the case, Lars’ Obi-Wan insult would be more innocent, with Joel Edgerton’s character simply doing all he can to keep Luke safe at Obi-Wan’s request. Regardless of the truth, Owen Lars insults Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars. Now, Obi-Wan Kenobi can finally give the moment a different point of view.
