While superhero movies are the big moneymakers of the day, the next era in blockbuster entertainment could belong to video games. Gone are the silly cash-grab video game adaptations (see: everything Uwe Boll has made) and soon coming are serious-minded adaptations by talented directors and writers, starring some big-name talent (see: Assassin’s Creed, Need for Speed, Splinter Cell – and of course, Warcraft).

This upcoming movie based on the World of Warcraft MMORPG has been one of the most interesting of the new-age video game movies. It changed creative hands several times over, before finally landing at Universal with Source Code director Duncan Jones both at the helm and handling revisions on a script by Blood Diamond scribe Charles Leavitt. That creative backbone was interesting enough, but the casting process made things even more intriguing.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Early on we heard that Colin Farrell would be headlining, and that Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol star Paula Patton would be co-starring. More official news came when we learned that Vikings star Travis Fimmel had officially snagged a role in the film, but the casting info ended there.

But now, Universal is revealing its initial casting lineup for Warcraft, confirming some of the early speculation, but also sparking new questions with these new answers:

Confirmed are Paula Patton and Travis Fimmel, with actors Ben Foster (X-Men 3), Toby Kebbell (Wrath of the Titans) and Rob Kazinsky (True Blood) announced for the film. (Also noted is that actor Dominic Cooper (Captain America: The First Avenger) is in “final negotiations” for a role.) For those unfamiliar with the actors, that boils down to a gorgeous and action-certified actress (Patton); a top-shelf character actor (Foster); a quality hunk/character actor (Kazinsky); a hardcore warrior type (Fimmel), and a guy who specializes in deadpan comic relief (Kebbell). Cooper is versatile, and could fill any number of slots in a cast.

On the sidelines, we’re still waiting to hear if Farrell will be a part of the production (though he’s apparently already praised the script); actors Anton Yelchin (Star Trek Into Darkness), Anson Mount (Hell on Wheels) and Paul Dano (12 Years a Slave) have also been rumored for the film.

According to the filmmakers, the Warcraft movie will follow, “the story of Anduin Lothar versus Durotan, Human and Orc heroes from the original real-time strategy games.” That leaves room for plenty of motion-capture or heavy makeup roles, meaning some of the cast may not be hired for their pretty faces.

Some concept art revealed to the public suggests that Jones and Co. are going for a one-of-a-kind epic fantasy world adventure movie – and so far, the cast bringing it to life seems pretty solid. We’ll see what else pans out.
