Though Richard E. Grant’s Classic Loki, a.k.a. Old Loki, appears to die in the penultimate Loki episode, a convincing theory states that he’s alive. In Loki episode 4, the Time Variance Authority prunes Loki (Tom Hiddleston), sending him to a void at the end of time. There, Loki learns that Loki variants are survivors, and many continue to live in the Void, constantly escaping from the grasp of Alioth. This cloud-like monster consumes matter and energy. Among the Loki variants occupying the Void are Classic Loki (Richard E. Grant), Kid Loki (Jack Veal), Boastful Loki (Deobia Oparei), and even an Alligator Loki.

Classic Loki has an interesting Marvel Cinematic Universe story. According to the character, he escaped from Thanos in the events of Avengers: Infinity War, pretending to hide as debris. After surviving Thanos, he made his way to a remote planet and lived for years in isolation. However, Old Loki eventually got bored and missed his family. When he made his first steps into getting off the remote planet, the TVA swooped in to arrest Richard E. Grant’s Loki variant. He was eventually pruned and has lived in the Void ever since.

It appears Classic Loki dies in Loki episode 5, but a theory (via New Rockstars’ YouTube) may reveal a twist. In Loki episode 5, Loki and Lady Loki (Sophia Di Martino) attempt to enchant Alioth to reach the villain behind the TVA. Though Classic Loki seemed to bail before the battle, he makes a glorious return, conjuring a fake Asgard to distract Alioth while Loki and Lady Loki work their magic on the monster. Though the distraction works, Classic Loki appears to sacrifice his life to help his friends, as the beast eventually eats him. However, the theory states there’s more to the story.

Like Classic Loki survived Thanos, he could’ve escaped as inanimate debris. After Loki and Lady Loki enchant Alioth, the beast reveals the Citadel at the End of Time. At this moment, various debris seems to float up into space. Classic Loki is a powerful sorcerer, as he showed with his fake Asgard. He could very well be the debris seen floating away. While Lady Loki and Loki were carrying out their plan, Classic Loki could’ve turned himself into debris, had his double distract Alioth, and eventually escaped the Void as an inanimate object. It’s the same plan he used on Thanos.

Classic Loki’s escape is a real possibility. It was earlier in the same episode that the character talked about his improbable escape from Thanos. If he were powerful enough to create the entire facade of Asgard in his supposed final stand, Classic Loki could’ve easily distracted Alioth with a fake double. However, Classic Loki’s helmet does get knocked off after Alioth supposedly eats him in Loki episode 5, perhaps hinting that the monster ate the real Classic Loki. But Loki is a trickster, and Classic Loki has been around long enough to have a few of those tricks still up his sleeve.
