On My Block season 3 took a lot of risks, but one that paid off the most was giving Jasmine Flores a more prominent role. The character, played by Jessica Marie Garcia, has been around since season 1 of the Netflix series. Out of all the characters, Jasmine has had one of the more notable and evolving arcs. Here’s why the series made the right choice in transforming the annoying classmate into a respected member of the group.

Jasmine is a fellow student at Freeridge High alongside Monse, Cesar, Jamal, and Ruby. When she was introduced, the group tried to avoid her due to her overbearing personality. She had a tendency to be loud, inappropriate, and a tad annoying when it came to getting attention. And for a while, the core four spent a lot of their time trying to avoid her. Jasmine always had her eye for Ruby, who had the toughest time escaping her grasp. The character has changed greatly, but she’s still known for his wild sense of fashion and crude remarks.

On My Block season 2 presented Jasmine’s backstory, but it showed the teenager in a new light. Even though she was always upbeat, it was revealed that Jasmine served as the primary caregiver for her war veteran father who had been in a catatonic state since coming back from Afghanistan. While Ruby dealt with his own PTSD throughout the season, Jasmine became his confidant. She helped him take his mind off of his trauma while also giving him an outlet to overcome some of his past. In doing so, Jasmine subsequently evolved as more than a punchline since she was portrayed as a multifaceted figure in the series. On My Block season 3 amped up that evolution and awarded Garcia’s character a spot among the primary group of friends.

Jasmine Turned The Core Four Into The Core Five

As a junior officer-in-training at the LAPD, Jasmine put her skills to the test and seemingly figure out what the core four was up to at the start of On My Block season 3. Instead, most of her theories were wrong but rather than force her out of the Lil Ricky mission, Monse, Cesar, Jamal, and Ruby allowed her to help them. From this moment, the core four grew into the core five. She gained a seat at the table and emerged as not only a suitable figure for the mission but as a leader, much to the dismay of Jamal. At times, Jasmine served as the motivator when the leads on Lil Ricky dried up.

Jasmine never lost her exuberant personality but the group went on to accept her anyway. Monse finally realized that there was more to Jasmine than she ever thought and the two became very close friends. Ruby also figured out that he had romantic feelings for Jasmine but she demanded his full respect before taking their relationship to the next level. By giving Jasmine more to do among the core set of friends, the series gave Jasmine the value she deserved. She recognized that the core four had history but Jasmine continued to prove herself as a worthy member of the group. Based on the events of the two-year time jump, here’s hoping there’s more to her arc than just being Ruby’s longterm girlfriend if On My Block season 4 happens.
