One Day at a Time has been cancelled by Pop TV after four seasons, as the critically acclaimed sitcom once again hopes to find a new home. The series was focused on three generations of a Cuban-American family, centering on a newly single mom and military veteran (played by Justina Machado) that experienced the ups and downs of raising two children with the help of her mother and building manager. With a cast that included Rita Moreno, Isabella Gomez, Marcel Ruiz, Todd Grinnell, and Stephen Tobolowsky, One Day at a Time was regularly praised for its standout performances and received four Emmy nominations.

Reimagining the 1970s sitcom of the same name, One Day at a Time premiered on Netflix in 2017 and ran for three seasons. Despite its acclaim and awards recognition, the show was cancelled in 2019. The decision caused a bit of an uproar, particularly due to Netflix’s statements on social media, which seemed to pretend that the streaming service was powerless to stop the cancellation. A subsequent campaign to save One Day at a Time was created by fans of the series and, in June, only a few months after it was axed by Netflix, it was announced that One Day at a Time would continue for a fourth season on Pop TV. In its premiere on the new network, a triumphant swipe at Netflix was included. Now, however, it looks like the show will start the familiar process of searching for a new home.

Variety reports that One Day at a Time has been cancelled by Pop TV after four seasons. Sony Pictures Television, which produces the sitcom, will reportedly shop it around to other outlets. ViacomCBS, the owner of Pop TV, had promoted One Day at a Time heavily. It was simulcast on both Pop and TV Land for its fourth season, while CBS aired episodes of the show starting in October. However, the COVID-19 production shutdown hampered the series.

Production was halted while the fourth season was ongoing. Two episodes had been filmed without a live studio audience. On the same day that an animated episode was announced, the show’s social media account posted a message thanking the viewers and promising to return. The animated installment, focused on politics, premiered back in June. As things currently stand, “The Politics Episode” may go down as the final episode of One Day at a Time. The disappointing news for fans of the sitcom comes during a moment when many traditional networks and streaming services have had to make often unpopular decisions about which shows to keep and which to cancel.

Most notably, Netflix reversed its call to renew GLOW for a fourth and a final season, launching calls for a movie continuation. And, in a similar vein, Stumptown was cancelled by ABC out of budgetary concerns. As the fallout from COVID-19 continues to alter the entertainment industry, it’s looking far more likely that the television landscape will come to experience the dilemma faced by movies. Rather than serving as a refuge for projects where diversity and creativity can flourish, the cancellation of One Day at a Time signals that only the biggest and most popular projects will move forward.
