In the latest chapter of One Piece, Trafalgar Law just finished off Big Mom in the most poetic way possible. Eiichiro Oda, the author of the pirate manga One Piece has always been great at writing satisfying endings to the series’ many fights. However, in the latest chapter, he may have outdone himself.

Trafalgar Law is a powerful ally to Luffy the main character of One Piece. Law can use the power of the Op Op Fruit, which lets him manipulate anything within a certain distance of himself. His path to acquiring this fruit was fraught with tragedy. After he and his entire family were poisoned by a toxin the World Government wanted to cover up, he had to watch his family get massacred as Navy soldiers wiped out the town they were living in. Law escaped and found his way into the pirate crew of the villainous Donquixote Doflamingo. While there he formed a deep bond with Doflamingo’s brother Corazon. To save Law from the lingering effects of the toxin he was poisoned with, Corazon betrayed Doflamingo by feeding Law the Op Op Fruit. This betrayal led Doflamingo to murder his own brother in front of Law, who was hiding behind Corazon. To keep Law from being discovered, Corazon used his own Devil Fruit ability as he was dying to silence Law’s grieving tears. While Law had previously made fun of Corazon’s Calm Calm Fruit ability to nullify sounds, here it saved his life as Corazon’s own life was slipping away. While Law helped Luffy and his crew defeat Doflamingo in the Dressrosa arc, thus getting his revenge for Corazon, he has continued to carry his mentor’s final moments with him.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

In chapter 1040 of One Piece, Law is able to use his memories of Corazon to finally put a stop to Big Mom’s rampage. Law and another pirate Eustass Kid have been fighting Big Mom for a while and it has taken a great toll on both sides. However, no matter what Kid and Law have been able to dish out against Big Mom, she has been able to recover and use her powers to devastating effect. In this chapter, Law finally realizes that the perfect way to stop her would be to follow Corazon’s example and use his Op Op Fruit to silence her. This prevents her from using her powers and lets Kid blast her away without resistance.

This moment is the perfect capstone to Law’s character arc so far. In chapter 996 when the raid on Onigashima was in its early stages, Law recalled some of Corazon’s words to him about how he was a carrier of the Will of D and replied to that memory, saying that he had made up his mind to discover exactly what that meant. Defeating the Four Emperors of the sea is a crucial part of doing this and so by defeating Big Mom Law has come one step closer to accomplishing his goal.

In the final moments of his fight with Big Mom, Law gets to experience a sort of twisted mirror of the fight that ultimately killed Corazon. However, instead of having his own cries silenced to save his life, he silenced his enemies cries in order to save the lives of all of his allies. In doing this, Trafalgar Law is able to end one of the largest ongoing battles in One Piece in a perfectly poetic way.
